Chapter 9 - A New Dawn at Whitfield Manor

The transition of the Whitfield estate was gradual, but beautiful.

The black staff dresses were packed away. Elena no longer polished the chandeliers or scrubbed the floors; instead, she filled the rooms with laughter, music, and a warm, inviting energy that the mansion had lacked for nearly a decade.

Mrs. Donnelly remained as the estate manager, but she was no longer Elena’s boss—she was her closest confidante.

“I’ve never seen him like this,” Mrs. Donnelly whispered to Elena one afternoon as they watched Nathaniel and Lily in the gardens.

Nathaniel was currently chasing Lily through the flower beds, his suit jacket discarded on the grass, his laughter echoing across the lawn as Lily squealed with delight.

“He’s happy,” Elena said, a soft, radiant smile spreading across her face. “We all are.”

Nathaniel courted Elena with a gentle patience that took her breath away. He took her on real dates—not to stuffy high-society galas, but to quiet, seaside restaurants where they could talk for hours about their childhoods, their dreams, and their fears. He listened to her. He respected her.

And as Lily’s fourth birthday approached, the preparation was entirely different.

There were no florists, no cold high-society guests, and no emerald-dressed monsters.

Instead, the guest list consisted of the household staff, the kitchen crew, a few of Lily’s friends from her new preschool, and Mrs. Donnelly. The grand ballroom was decorated with colorful balloons, hand-drawn banners, and a massive play area where children could run around without fear of breaking anything expensive.

“Are you ready, birthday girl?” Nathaniel asked, lifting Lily onto his shoulders as the crowd gathered around the table.

“Ready!” Lily shouted, waving her wooden rabbit in the air.

This time, when the cake was brought out—a magnificent, three-tiered masterpiece decorated with chocolate bunnies and sugar flowers—there was no malice to ruin the moment.

Lily blew out her candles to a chorus of cheers and applause, her small face glowing with pure, unadulterated joy.
