Chapter 6 - Reclaiming the Light

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom slammed shut behind Victoria, cutting off her screeching protests.

For a moment, the room remained paralyzed. The scandal of the century had just unfolded in front of them, but Nathaniel did not care about the gossip columns or the tomorrow’s headlines.

He turned his back on the crowd of three hundred wealthy onlookers and walked straight back to the corner of the room.

Elena was still kneeling on the floor, holding Lily close to her chest. Her mind was spinning. The revelation of Victoria’s betrayal, the threat of ruin, the sheer chaos of the evening—it was all too much.

Nathaniel knelt beside them again. This time, he didn't care about his reputation, the cameras, or the boundaries of employer and employee. He reached out and gently placed his hand over Elena’s trembling fingers.

“It’s over, Elena,” he said, his voice incredibly soft. “She will never hurt you, or Lily, ever again.”

Elena looked up, her eyes swimming with tears. “Nathaniel… I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry she ruined everything.”

“She didn't ruin anything,” Nathaniel said, looking down at Lily, who had quieted down to soft hiccups. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out another object—a small, wooden carving of a little rabbit, hand-painted with beautiful, vibrant colors.

“I had a backup,” Nathaniel whispered, offering it to Lily. “This one is made of oak. It doesn't break.”

Lily sniffled, her small hand reaching out to take the wooden rabbit. A tiny, fragile smile broke through her tears. “It’s Mr. Bun’s brother.”

“Exactly,” Nathaniel smiled, his eyes crinkling.

He then stood up and turned to the crowd of guests, who were still standing in stunned silence.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Nathaniel’s voice rang out, strong and commanding. “The engagement celebration is canceled. But the birthday party is just getting started. If you wish to stay and celebrate the third birthday of the most important little girl in this house, you are welcome to do so. If not, the valet will bring your cars around.”

To Elena’s utter astonishment, not a single person left.

Led by Mrs. Donnelly and the kitchen staff, the entire room erupted into applause. The orchestra began to play a bright, happy tune. Guests who had previously ignored Elena and Lily began walking over, offering kind smiles, gentle words, and even slipping off their own expensive lapel pins and silk scarves to place on Lily’s pink table as makeshift gifts.

For the rest of the night, Lily was treated like a princess. She was fed the biggest slice of blueberry cake she had ever seen, and the grand ballroom, which had once felt so cold and dead to Nathaniel, was filled with the sound of a child’s laughter.

As the night drew to a close, Nathaniel stood near the grand French doors, watching Lily sleep peacefully in Elena’s arms.

Elena walked over to him, her expression soft and full of a deep, profound gratitude. “I don't know how to thank you, Nathaniel. You saved us tonight.”

Nathaniel looked at her, the moonlight from the gardens illuminating the gentle curves of his face.

“You didn't need saving, Elena,” he said softly. “You’ve been saving me since the day you walked into this house. I just finally decided to let you.”
