Chapter 8 - The Price of Treachery

Two months later, the trial of Victoria Hale and her father began in a federal court in Hartford.

Nathaniel had insisted on attending, and to the surprise of the public, he did not go alone. Elena sat beside him in the courtroom, wearing a simple, elegant navy dress he had bought for her, her hand securely locked in his.

Victoria sat at the defense table, looking a shadow of her former self. Her designer clothes had been replaced by a drab grey suit, and her hair, once perfectly coiffed, was pulled back in a messy knot.

When she saw Elena sitting next to Nathaniel, her eyes flared with one last spark of venomous rage.

“She’s a gold-digger!” Victoria screamed suddenly, pointing a shaking finger at Elena as the judge tried to call the room to order. “She planned this! She used her brat to get to him! She’s nothing but a dirty maid!”

The judge banged his gavel repeatedly. “Order! Silence in the court!”

Nathaniel did not even flinch. He simply squeezed Elena’s hand tighter, leaning over to whisper in her ear: “She can’t touch us anymore, my love.”

The evidence against the Hales was overwhelming. The prosecution presented the offshore account records, the tapped phone conversations, and the testimonies of the charity coordinators who had been forced to falsify documents.

The jury took less than two hours to reach a verdict.

Guilty on all counts.

As Victoria was sentenced to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary, she broke down, weeping hysterically as she was led away in chains. She had wanted to destroy a little girl’s life; instead, she had built her own prison.

As they walked down the steps of the courthouse, surrounded by a swarm of reporters and flashing cameras, Nathaniel stopped. He turned to face the media, pulling Elena close to his side.

“Mr. Whitfield!” a reporter shouted. “Is it true that you are dating your housekeeper? What about the scandal?”

Nathaniel looked directly into the camera lens.

“Elena Carter is not my housekeeper,” Nathaniel said, his voice clear and proud for the entire world to hear. “She is the woman who saved my life. And she is the future of the Whitfield family.”
