Chapter 9 - The Question Under the Stars

That evening, the penthouse was quiet and filled with the comforting scent of vanilla and baking cookies.

Sophia had fallen asleep early after a long day of drawing pictures with crayons at the kitchen island—pictures that prominently featured three stick figures: a tall one labeled 'Daddy,' a small one labeled 'Sophia,' and one with long dark hair and a bright yellow smile labeled 'Jessica.'

Alexander found Jessica standing out on the expansive private wrap-around terrace on the top floor.

She was wearing a thick knitted cream sweater, her arms crossed over her chest as she looked out at the twinkling lights of the city stretching across the Hudson River. The night wind was brisk, rustling her dark hair.

Alexander walked out quietly, holding a warm woolen throw blanket. Without a word, he draped it gently over her shoulders.

Jessica jumped slightly, turning around with a soft gasp. "Oh. Mr. Whitmore—Alexander. I didn't hear you come out."

"You can call me Alexander," he smiled softly, stepping closer. "Or just Alex, if you're off the clock."

"I'm technically always on the clock when I'm here," Jessica smiled faintly, pulling the wool blanket closer around her.

"Not tonight," Alexander said gently. He leaned against the glass railing beside her, looking out at the city lights before turning his gaze toward her profile. "Marcus Vance came to see me today."

Jessica’s expression tightened slightly, her eyes flickering with concern. "Did something happen at the office? Was it about my contract?"

"It was about people who don't understand anything about what really matters," Alexander said quietly. "They looked at numbers, legal clauses, and social optics. They don't see what I see."

Jessica turned her head to look at him, her dark eyes searching his face in the dim amber light of the terrace. "What do you see, Alexander?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately. He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray strand of hair away from her face, his touch lingering against her cheek. Jessica’s breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening slightly as she looked up into his gaze.

"I see a woman who walked into a house full of ghosts and brought the light back," Alexander whispered, his voice thick with an emotion he no longer tried to conceal. "I see a woman who saved my daughter’s life... and who completely and irrevocably healed mine."

Tears welled up in Jessica’s eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of sorrow or memory. They were bright, warm, and real.

"Alexander..." she breathed, her voice trembling slightly. "I'm just... I came from Queens. I didn't think..."

"I don't care where you came from, Jessica," Alexander interrupted softly, stepping closer until there was barely any space between them. "I only care about where we go from here. I love you. And Sophia loves you more than words can say. If you'll let me... I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders alone."

Jessica looked into his eyes, seeing all the walls he had built around his heart completely dismantled, leaving only honesty and deep, enduring love.

A radiant, beautiful smile broke across her face, and a single tear slipped down her cheek as she nodded.

May you like

"Yes," she whispered. "I'd like that very much."

When Alexander pulled her into his arms and kissed her, the cold wind of the Manhattan night completely disappeared, replaced by the warmth of a true, unbreakable home.
