Chapter 7 - Spring in Central Park

By April, Central Park had burst into a brilliant riot of green and pink as the cherry blossoms bloomed across the lawns.

For the first time in over a year, Alexander canceled his morning meetings, cleared his schedule entirely, and declared it a family day.

When Sophia bounded out of her bedroom wearing a bright yellow sundress—her hair braided neatly by Jessica’s practiced hands—she ran straight into Alexander’s arms, squealing with laughter as he lifted her high into the air.

"Are we going to the zoo, Daddy?" Sophia asked, her eyes wide with excitement.

"We are going to the zoo, the carousel, and we are getting the biggest ice cream cone in Manhattan," Alexander promised, a wide, genuine grin spreading across his face.

Jessica walked out behind them, carrying a small canvas tote bag filled with water bottles, wet wipes, and a few small snacks. She wore a simple denim jacket over a white blouse, looking less like a housekeeper or a nanny and more like a young woman enjoying a sunny spring day in the city.

Alexander stopped, looking at her with an expression that carried a depth far beyond employer and employee. "Ready, Jessica?"

"Ready," she smiled.

Walking through Central Park together, they looked like any normal, happy family. Passersby didn't see the billionaire hotel tycoon; they just saw a tall man holding a little girl's hand on one side, and a radiant young woman laughing softly beside them on the other.

Sophia insisted on riding the carousel twice, her small gloved hands gripping the brass pole of a painted wooden horse while Alexander stood right beside her, keeping her steady. Jessica sat on a nearby wooden bench, watching them, her heart swelling with a strange, beautiful warmth she hadn't allowed herself to feel in years.

When the ride ended, Alexander walked over to Jessica, holding two large cotton candies and a chocolate ice cream cone for Sophia.

"Your turn," Alexander said, sitting down beside her on the bench.

"My turn for what?" Jessica asked, raising an eyebrow.

"For fun," Alexander said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made the spring breeze feel suddenly warm. "You spend all your time taking care of everyone else, Jessica. Today, you let us take care of you."

Before Jessica could reply, Sophia trotted over, holding out a sticky piece of blue cotton candy. "Here, Jessica! Try it! It tastes like sweet clouds!"

Jessica laughed—a bright, ringing sound that made Alexander’s chest ache with a profound, undeniable realization.
