Chapter 9 - Healing and Redemption

Two years later, the grand opening of the Camila Vasquez Pediatric Wing was the event of the year.

Camila stood in the grand lobby, wearing a pristine white lab coat with her real name embroidered in silver thread: Dr. Camila Vasquez, Chief of Pediatrics.

The hospital was beautiful, filled with natural light, colorful murals for the children, and the most advanced medical technology in the world. But more importantly, it had a policy implemented by Camila herself: No child would ever be turned away, regardless of their family’s financial status or immigration status.

Suddenly, she felt a small tug on her lab coat.

She looked down to see a healthy, energetic two-and-a-half-year-old Diego. He was holding a small bouquet of hand-picked daisies.

"For you, Auntie Cami!" he chirped, his voice bright and clear.

Camila knelt down, catching him in a big hug. "Thank you, my little angel. You are the reason all of this exists."

Rafael and Isabel walked over, looking at her with immense pride.

"We just got word from the federal prosecutors," Rafael whispered to her, out of earshot of the press. "Hector Vasquez was arrested in Europe on international money laundering and human rights charges. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars. You are completely safe, Camila. Your past can never touch you again."

Camila let out a long, shuddering breath. It was as if a physical weight she had carried for years had finally, completely evaporated into the air. She looked up at the glass ceiling of her new hospital, feeling the warm sunlight on her face.
