Chapter 5 - A New Beginning

Two weeks later, Carmen walked into a beautiful, sunlit townhouse in one of the city's safest, most prestigious neighborhoods. The deed was in her name—legally protected by the Mendoza Group’s elite legal team.
"Do you like it?" a soft voice asked.
Carmen turned to see Isabel Mendoza standing in the doorway, holding a healthy, chubby-cheeked baby Diego in her arms. Isabel did not look like the shattered, weak woman from the hospital. She was radiant, her eyes glowing with maternal joy.
"It is... too much," Carmen stammered, looking at the elegant furniture and the wide windows overlooking a private garden. "I cannot accept this, Mrs. Mendoza."
"Please, call me Isabel," she said, walking over and gently placing Diego in Carmen’s arms.
As soon as the baby felt Carmen’s touch, he stopped squirming and let out a soft, contented coo, his tiny fingers wrapping around her thumb. Tears welled in Carmen’s eyes.
"He remembers you," Isabel whispered, placing a hand on Carmen’s shoulder. "We want you to be his private medical supervisor and caregiver. You will have a salary that matches your true expertise as a pediatrician. But more than that, we want you in our lives. You are family now."
For the first time in five years, Carmen felt the icy grip of fear begin to thaw. She smiled, pressing her forehead against the baby’s soft head.
However, peace is often a fragile thing.
Across town, at the hospital where the miracle had occurred, Dr. Harrison was stewing in jealousy and anger. The board of directors was questioning his competency. The Mendoza family had pulled all their funding from his department, redirecting it to a private trust. Harrison knew that a "cleaning woman" had done what his entire team of specialists could not.

He began digging into the hospital’s security footage from that night. He zoomed in on Carmen’s face. He knew she wasn't just a janitor. He recognized the technique she used—it was a highly specialized, desperate neonatal cardiac stimulation technique rarely taught in the West.
"Who are you really, 'Carmen'?" Harrison muttered, staring at his computer screen. "And what are the Mendozas hiding?"
