Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

Winter arrived, blanketing the Duarte estate in a pristine coat of white snow. The house was filled with the scents of pine, cinnamon, and fresh baking—a stark contrast to the cold, sterile environment of the previous year.
However, peace is rarely won without one final test.
In mid-December, just as the family was preparing for Christmas, Hector brought troubling news to Emiliano’s study.
"Patricia’s legal team is attempting a final, desperate maneuver before the trial," Hector reported, placing a legal document on the desk. "They are claiming that the security footage obtained from the mansion on the day of your fake trip was recorded illegally without her consent, attempting to get the main evidence thrown out of court."
Emiliano’s eyes narrowed. "The cameras were installed in my own home, on my private property, for the explicitly stated purpose of estate security. Every employee and guest signs a standard privacy disclosure upon entering."
"Her lawyers are arguing that as your cohabitating fiancée, she had a reasonable expectation of privacy in the common areas," Hector explained. "If the judge accepts the motion, it could delay the criminal trial indefinitely and allow her legal team to petition for bail."
Emiliano stood up, his jaw set in a hard, uncompromising line. "She will not walk free. She will not set foot near my daughters again."
"There is one way to shut down the motion permanently," Hector added. "A sworn, first-hand witness testimony from someone who was present during the verbal abuse and corporate conspiracy—someone whose credibility is completely beyond reproach."
"Rosa," Emiliano said softly.
"Yes," Hector nodded. "If Rosa agrees to testify in open court regarding what occurred that morning and throughout the preceding months, Patricia’s defense will completely collapse. But... it will mean putting Rosa in the public spotlight. The media will descend on her. Patricia’s lawyers will try to tear her character apart on the stand."
Emiliano immediately shook his head. "No. I won't put her through that. She has already suffered enough because of my foolishness. I won't allow high-priced lawyers to cross-examine her and attack her dignity."
"I will do it."
Both men turned toward the doorway. Rosa stood there, holding a tray of afternoon tea. She had heard the conversation.
She walked into the room, setting the tray down on the desk with steady hands. Her face was calm, her posture erect and resolute.
"Rosa, you don't understand how vicious defense attorneys can be," Emiliano said gently, stepping toward her with deep concern in his eyes. "They will try to frame you as an ambitious servant who fabricated stories to gain favor. They will probe into your personal life, your family's financial struggles—"
"Let them try," Rosa said, interrupting him with a quiet strength that left both men speechless.
She looked directly into Emiliano’s eyes, her gaze unflinching. "I spent months watching that woman torment Daniela and Martina in secret. I spent months swallowing my pride while she insulted my character and threatened my livelihood. I kept quiet then because I had to protect the girls. But I am not afraid of her anymore, Emiliano. I am not afraid of her lawyers, and I am not afraid of the truth."
Emiliano stared at her, an overwhelming wave of admiration sweeping through him. He saw a courage in this quiet young woman that surpassed that of any corporate titan or politician he had ever dealt with in his long career.

"You don't have to fight my battles, Rosa," Emiliano whispered, his voice full of tender awe.
"It isn't just your battle, Emiliano," Rosa replied softly, a gentle smile breaking across her lips. "It's our family's battle. And I won't let her touch our home ever again."
