Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

In the dim glow of the security monitors, the air grew thick and heavy, smelling faintly of heated electronics and ozone. Emiliano Duarte sat unmoving, his posture rigid as a iron pillar, his dark eyes fixated on the screens before him. Beside him, Hector, his trusted chief of security, maintained a stoic silence, though the subtle tightening of the guard’s jaw made it clear that he, too, was witnessing a horror he had never anticipated within the walls of the Duarte estate.

On Screen Four, depicting the high-ceilinged grand living room, the scene continued to unfold with a terrifying, calculated rhythm.

Patricia took a step closer to Rosa. The elegant woman who had shared Emiliano’s bed, the woman who spoke in delicate tones at charity galas and adjusted his silk ties with soft, manicured hands, had vanished entirely. In her place stood a stranger—her features sharp with disdain, her posture menacing.

"I told you yesterday, Rosa," Patricia’s voice came through the high-definition audio feeds, crisp and laced with contempt. "You are staff. You sweep the marble, you scrub the toilets, and you stay out of family matters. If I see you speaking to the girls without my permission again, I won't just fire you—I'll ensure you never find work in this city again. Do you understand me?"

Rosa stood her ground. She was small compared to Patricia, dressed in her simple navy blue uniform, her dark hair tied neatly back. Yet, she did not flinch. She kept her eyes lowered slightly in a posture of formal respect, but her body remained firmly positioned between Patricia and the two terrified young girls cowering near the sofa.

"I understand my duties, Miss Patricia," Rosa replied, her voice calm, low, and steady. "My duty is to ensure the safety and well-being of Mr. Duarte’s children while he is away. Mr. Duarte asked me personally to look after them."

Patricia let out a harsh, bitter laugh that echoed unnervingly through the speaker monitors. "Mr. Duarte isn't here, you foolish girl. He is on a flight to Zurich. And when he returns, he will belong to me entirely. This house will be mine. His fortune will be under my guidance. And you... you will be thrown out onto the street like the trash you are."

In the monitoring room, Emiliano felt a sudden, sharp coldness spread from his chest to his fingertips. His breath hitched in his throat. Zurich? He had told Patricia he was going to Frankfurt, but had casually mentioned a layover in Zurich during a private phone call two days ago—a call she wasn't supposed to have overheard. Every detail of her deception began to align in his mind like falling dominoes.

On the screen, Patricia reached out, her long fingers with their blood-red nails lunging toward Martina’s arm to pull the child toward her. "Get upstairs," Patricia commanded the children. "Both of you. Into your rooms. You will not come down for lunch. You will reflect on your attitude."

"No!" Daniela, only ten years old but fiercely protective of her younger sister, stood up, placing herself in front of eight-year-old Martina. "We didn't do anything wrong! You're mean! We want Dad!"

Patricia’s eyes narrowed into slit-like embers of rage. "Your father doesn't care about your pathetic little tantrums. Why do you think he leaves all the time? Why do you think he runs across the world? Because you bore him. Because he is tired of dealing with dead weight!"

The words hit the monitoring room like a physical blow. Emiliano gasped, rising slightly from his leather chair before Hector gently placed a heavy hand on his employer's shoulder.

"Not yet, sir," Hector whispered, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. "Let us see the full extent of this. We need to know everything."

Emiliano forced himself back into the seat, his knuckles white as he clenched the arms of the chair. The pain in his chest was excruciating. His daughters—his precious girls, whom he loved more than life itself—were being told that their father had abandoned them because he found them burdensome. And he had allowed this woman into their sanctuary. He had believed her poisoned whispers over the quiet, steadfast loyalty of a woman who had poured her heart into caring for his family.

On the screen, Rosa stepped forward, physically blocking Patricia’s arm from touching Daniela. "That is enough, Miss Patricia," Rosa said, her tone no longer deferential, but firm, motherly, and resolute. "You will not speak to them that way. You will not touch them."

Patricia recoiled, shocked by the domestic worker's defiance. "How dare you! Get your hands off me!"

"I am taking the girls to the kitchen to have their lunch," Rosa declared quietly, extending her hands to Daniela and Martina. The two girls immediately latched onto Rosa's fingers, burying their faces against her side, seeking the warmth and safety that should have been provided by the woman who aspired to be their mother.

Patricia stood frozen in the middle of the living room, her face twisted in a mask of pure fury as Rosa calmly escorted the children down the hallway toward the kitchen wing. When they were out of sight, Patricia kicked a hand-woven Persian rug in frustration, then pulled out her encrusted smartphone, tapping the screen aggressively.

"It's me," Patricia spoke into the phone, her voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper. "The old man is finally gone. He took the bait completely. He thinks he's managing a crisis in Europe. We have three days to execute the transfer papers. Get the lawyer ready. And make sure the offshore accounts are primed... No, the kids are no problem. I'm keeping them locked away. Once the marriage contract is signed next month, we can ship them off to a boarding school in Switzerland."

In the darkness of the monitoring room, Emiliano felt his blood run entirely cold. The betrayal was absolute, calculated, and monstrous. It was not just petty jealousy or dislike of the children; it was a hostile takeover of his life, his wealth, and his family.

He turned to Hector. His voice was no longer that of a doubting, grieving widower, but of the formidable industrial tycoon who had built an empire from nothing.

"Hector," Emiliano said, his tone chillingly calm. "Call my personal legal team. Lock down every bank account connected to her names. And keep those cameras recording every single second."
