Chapter 3 - The Frame Job and the Broken Vow

The morning of the accusation began like any other, but the air inside the grand dining hall felt unnaturally heavy.
Vivian had arrived unannounced, bringing custom-made silk dresses for Isabella—dresses that Isabella politely declined, preferring to play floor dominoes with Emma. An hour later, the house alarm sounded: Isabella’s life-saving digital pill safe in the private medical room had been breached. The digital lock had been opened with an admin code, and four bottles of rare, customized cardiac regulators were missing.
Without those specific pills, a sudden cardiac event would prove fatal for Isabella within hours.
Vincent Russo led the search, his heavy boots echoing ominously through the marble corridors. When he stopped before Emma’s tiny pink backpack sitting on a bench in the main foyer, Sophia felt her blood turn to ice.
“Check the bag,” Vivian urged, standing beside Lorenzo with an expression of deeply staged concern. “It’s impossible, of course... but we must be thorough for Isabella’s safety.”
That brought the story back to the terrible moment in the grand hall:
The first bottle rolled out of the little pink backpack... The second landed beside it. Then the third. Then the fourth.
“No,” three-year-old Emma whispered, her eyes wide with uncomprehending terror.
Sophia dropped to her knees. “Mr. Moretti, please. I swear to you, I never touched those bottles!”
Sophia’s eyes darted toward Vivian. She remembered what she had seen just two nights ago—Vivian slipping out of the medical wing late at night, slipping a silver keycard into Vincent’s jacket pocket. She remembered seeing Vincent hand Vivian a small velvet pouch.
Sophia opened her mouth to scream the truth, to call out Vincent and Vivian in front of everyone.
Then Vivian tilted her head slightly and looked straight at Emma. Vivian’s hand moved down to touch a small silver pen in her pocket—a device Sophia knew was connected to the estate’s automated security gates. The threat was unspoken, crystal clear, and absolute: Say one word, and neither you nor your daughter leave this estate alive.
Sophia closed her mouth. The silence swallowed her whole.
Lorenzo stood motionless, staring at the medicine bottles on the floor. His face was a mask of dark, unreadable marble. He looked at the evidence. He looked at the trembling maid who suddenly refused to speak. To a man who had been lied to and targeted his entire life, silence looked like guilt.
“Vincent,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a terrifying register. “Remove her.”
“Papa, NO!” Isabella screamed, throwing her arms around Emma’s neck, crying hysterically. “She’s my sister! Don’t let them take Emma!”
“Isabella, step back,” Lorenzo commanded, though his own heart ripped inside his chest at his daughter’s agonizing sobs.
Vincent stepped forward, grabbing Sophia by the arm. “Let’s go. Boss says you’re out.”

“Wait,” Lorenzo snapped, his dark eyes fixing on Sophia. “Leave the child’s belongings. Sophia, take your daughter and get off my land. If I ever see your face in New York again, the law won't be involved.”
Sophia grabbed Emma, pulling the weeping toddler into her arms. She didn't fight. She didn't beg anymore. She simply held Emma close, wrapped her coat around the child’s shivering shoulders, and walked out into the pouring rain, leaving behind the small pink backpack and the only safe haven they had ever known.
