Chapter 7 - A Sanctuary Broken

Lady Beatrice left the estate that night, but the war was far from over.

The next morning, news of the internal investigation at Ashcombe Biotech leaked to the press. Stock prices fluctuated wildly, and board members demanded an emergency summit. Nathaniel spent forty-eight solid hours at the corporate headquarters, stripping away corruption root and branch, firing complicit executives, and restructuring the company’s pediatric research department into a non-profit foundation.

Through it all, his main priority remained the safety and peace of mind of the people living under his roof.

He gave Willow, Leo, and the twins full access to the family’s summer estate in the quiet, rolling hills of Sussex—far away from the cameras and reporters swarming Belgravia.

When Nathaniel finally drove down to Sussex late on a Friday evening, the silence of the countryside felt like a healing salve. The grand country house, surrounded by ancient oaks and lush green lawns, was ablaze with warm light.

He walked into the large farmhouse kitchen to find a scene of chaotic domestic bliss.

Leo and Nora were sitting at the large wooden table, covered in flour, attempting to make homemade cookies. In the center of the room, Willow was holding Wren's hands.

Nathaniel stopped in the doorway, holding his breath.

Wren was standing on her own feet. Not leaning against a walker. Not relying on a wall. Her little legs were trembling slightly, but her eyes were fixed on Willow’s encouraging face.

"One more step, sweet girl," Willow whispered softly. "Just one more for Mum."

Wren let go of Willow's hands. She wobbly balanced herself, lifted her left foot, and took a firm step forward. Then another. And another. She took four steps across the hardwood floor and tumbled safely into Willow’s waiting arms, dissolving into giggles.

Nora cheered, throwing flour into the air, while Leo clapped excitedly.

Willow caught Wren, lifting her up and kissing her rosy cheeks, tears of joy sparkling on her eyelashes. When she turned around, her eyes met Nathaniel’s.

Nathaniel stood rooted to the spot, his heart beating wildly against his ribs. He felt a tear slip down his own cheek, unbidden and unashamed.

"She did it," Nathaniel choked out, walking into the kitchen.

"She did it," Willow echoed, her voice thick with emotion.

Nathaniel reached them, dropping to his knees on the kitchen floor. He wrapped his arms around both Willow and Wren, pulling them tight against his chest. Wren wrapped her small arms around his neck, resting her head on his shoulder, while Willow rested her cheek against his shoulder.

For the first time since his wife had passed away years ago, Nathaniel felt complete. The cold, hollow void inside him was filled with light, warmth, and a profound sense of home.
