Chapter 5 - The Storm at Ashcombe Manor

Willow didn't run. She didn't cry out. She simply went deathly pale, her hands dropping to her sides as if she had been struck by a silent bullet.

"You looked into my past," she breathed, her voice trembling slightly.

"I had to," Nathaniel said, taking a step closer. "I am a father, Willow. I have two defenseless children. When I find out my nanny lost her physical therapy license over an injury to a child, and that my family's corporate lawyer paid off the lawsuit... I need answers."

Willow closed her eyes for a brief moment, pulling in a deep, unsteady breath. When she opened them again, the fear was gone, replaced by a cold, searing anger.

"The boy in Surrey was my son," Willow said quietly.

Nathaniel froze. "Leo?"

"Leo," Willow repeated, her voice steadying. "When Leo was two years old, he was diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular condition—the exact same condition Wren has. I was a licensed pediatric physiotherapist. I knew the conventional treatments weren't working. I developed a specialized movement protocol to save my son's ability to walk."

"Then why were you accused of malpractice?"

"Because the clinic I worked for was owned by a subsidiary of Ashcombe Biotech," Willow revealed, her eyes burning with intensity. "They were developing an expensive, lifelong drug treatment for that exact condition. My physical therapy protocol—if proven effective—would have rendered their multi-million-pound drug obsolete."

Nathaniel’s breath hitched. "Ashcombe Biotech...?"

"Desmond Kerr was on the board of that subsidiary," Willow continued, stepping toward Nathaniel now, her posture fierce and protective. "When they realized what my treatment was doing for Leo, they panicked. They framed me for practicing unapproved medicine. They threatened to take Leo away from me, claiming I was abusing him with experimental treatments. Desmond Kerr offered me a choice: sign a non-disclosure agreement, give up my license, and accept a private settlement to cover Leo's medical expenses... or go to prison and lose my son forever."

Nathaniel felt the floor beneath him shift. The monstrous truth of what his company—what his family—had done washed over him like ice water.

"I signed," Willow whispered, a single tear finally spilling over her lashes. "I gave up my passion, my career, my reputation... to keep my son. I spent four years working as a housekeeper, moving from town to town, keeping my head down. And then I saw your advertisement for a nanny in London. I saw that your daughter had the same condition. I couldn't leave her to suffer the same fate. I came here for Wren, Nathaniel. Not for money. Not for revenge. For her."

Before Nathaniel could respond, the door to the nursery burst open.

Lady Beatrice stood on the threshold, flanked by two uniformed police officers and a smirking Camilla Rhodes.

"Officers," Lady Beatrice announced imperiously, pointing a gloved finger at Willow. "That is the woman. She is an unlicensed medical fraud and an illegal trespasser. Arrest her immediately."
