Chapter 8 - The New Arrival

Two weeks later, at three o'clock on a cool Tuesday morning, the quiet of the Lake Forest estate was broken by a sudden, sharp intake of breath beside me in the bed.
I was instantly awake, my eyes snapping open in the darkness.
“Claire?” I sat up quickly, switching on the bedside lamp.
Claire was gripping the edge of the mattress, her knuckles turning white, her face pale as a soft groan escaped her lips. “Sebastian... it’s time. The contractions... they’re three minutes apart.”
My heart hammered against my ribs, but unlike the blind panic of my past corporate crises, this was a clear, focused urgency. I didn't hesitate. I had planned for this moment down to the very last detail.
“Hold on,” I said, moving with calm precision. I grabbed her pre-packed hospital bag from the closet, slipped my arm under her shoulders, and helped her up.
Within ten minutes, we were in the back of our private vehicle, with Director Vance driving smoothly toward the premier private maternity hospital in downtown Chicago. Dr. Evelyn Vance was already notified and waiting for us at the private VIP entrance, bypassing all emergency room chaos.
The next six hours were a blur of intense emotion, medical efficiency, and unwavering support.
I stayed by Claire’s side the entire time, holding her hand, wiping the sweat from her forehead, and whispering words of encouragement into her ear. She was fierce, strong, and impossibly brave, pushing through the pain with a resilience that made me fall in love with her all over again.
And then, at precisely 9:14 AM, a sharp, resonant cry pierced the sterile air of the delivery room.
“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Carter,” Dr. Vance smiled warmly, her eyes crinkling behind her mask. “You have a healthy, beautiful baby boy. Nine pounds, ten ounces of pure perfection.”
Tears blurred my vision as Dr. Vance wrapped the newborn in a soft flannel blanket and gently placed him directly onto Claire’s chest.
For a few seconds, the entire world stopped spinning.
Claire wept openly, her hands trembling as she cradled our son close to her heart, pressing kisses to his damp dark hair. The baby quieted almost instantly against her skin, sensing the warmth and safety of his mother’s embrace.
“Look at him, Sebastian,” Claire choked out, looking up at me with a radiant, tear-stained smile. “He has your eyes.”

I leaned down, pressing my forehead against hers, letting my own tears fall onto the blanket as I gently stroked our son’s tiny cheek.
“Welcome home, little one,” I whispered. “Your name is Julian. And no one will ever, ever hurt you.”
