Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Foyer

The security teams arrived within twenty minutes. Black SUVs swept through the wrought-iron gates of the Lake Forest estate, parking strategically around the perimeter to block every exit. Men in dark suits and earpieces fanned out across the manicured lawns, sealing the property tighter than a federal bunker.
I stood at the top of the grand staircase, looking down into the foyer.
Margaret was pacing back and forth near the double doors, her phone clutched tightly in her hand. She had clearly tried to call Dr. Harrison and realized he had vanished. When she saw the security guards securing the doors from the inside, her face contorted with fury.
“Sebastian!” she shrieked, looking up toward the landing. “Have you lost your mind? Call these men off immediately! What kind of circus are you running in my house?”
Her house.
The audacity of the word grated against my nerves. I walked down the stairs slowly, my footsteps echoing against the marble like the ticking of a countdown clock.
“It’s not your house, Margaret,” I said evenly, stopping halfway down the steps to look down at her. “It’s mine. I bought it, I paid for it, and every single luxury you have enjoyed for the last ten years was funded by my labor and my company.”
Margaret stopped pacing, her eyes flashing with venom. She threw her head back with a bitter, defensive laugh. “Your labor? You forget where you came from, Sebastian! Who raised you when your father died? Who worked nights so you could go to college? You owe me everything! Without me, you’d still be working a register in Indiana!”
“I acknowledge what you did when I was a child,” I replied, my voice chillingly calm. “I honored it by giving you a home, an allowance, drivers, respect, and a life most people only dream of. But you didn't just ask for gratitude, Margaret. You demanded ownership over my life, my marriage, and now... my child.”
“I did what was necessary for this family!” she screamed, her mask finally dropping completely, revealing the desperate, manipulative woman beneath. “Ryan is dying! Your brother needs a future! That woman—that pathetic wife of yours—is a nobody! She couldn't even give you a healthy child without medical intervention! Taking a fraction of what your son has to save your brother is a small price to pay for blood!”
“Blood,” I repeated, stepping down the final stair. “You don't know the meaning of the word. Blood doesn't give you the right to starve my wife, psychological torture her, and plot to steal my newborn son like cattle.”
Before Margaret could retort, the heavy front doors opened slightly, and Director Vance stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder. He walked up to me and handed it over without a word before stepping back.
I opened the folder, flipping through printed copies of financial wire transfers, intercepted emails, and Dr. Harrison’s complete, signed confession detailing the conspiracy against Claire and our unborn child.
“What is that?” Margaret muttered, her voice finally carrying a trace of genuine fear as she looked at the papers in my hand.
“It’s your retirement plan, Margaret,” I said coldly. “Or rather, your indictment. Dr. Harrison has confessed to everything. The falsified medical logs, the planned illegal tissue extraction, and the extortion.”
Margaret’s face turned ashen. She took a step back, her hands trembling. “You... you wouldn't send your own mother to prison. The press would have a field day. Eastbridge’s stock would plummet—”
“Let it plummet,” I interrupted without hesitation. “An empire built on human suffering and family betrayal isn't worth keeping. But let me assure you, Margaret—Eastbridge will survive, because the board answers to me, not to blackmailers. And you? You are going away for a very, very long time.”
Just as Margaret opened her mouth to scream another denial, a soft click echoed from the top of the stairs.
I looked up.
Claire was standing at the landing, dressed in a clean, soft cotton robe I had fetched from the guest suite. Her face was still pale, and the dark circles under her eyes spoke of unimaginable exhaustion, but her spine was straight. She looked down at Margaret with a quiet, sorrowful dignity that completely dismantled my mother’s remaining pride.
“You tried to take my baby,” Claire said softly, her voice carrying clearly across the grand foyer. “Not because you needed him, Margaret... but because you never learned how to love anyone except yourself.”
Margaret glared up at Claire with pure hatred. “You ruined everything! You parasite!”
“Director Vance,” I said, not taking my eyes off my mother.
“Yes, sir?”
“Escort Mrs. Carter off my property. Hand these files directly to the federal prosecutor waiting outside in the vehicle. And ensure she is never, ever allowed within five miles of my wife, my home, or my child again.”
May you like
“Right away, Mr. Carter,” Vance replied crisply.
Two security guards stepped forward, gently but firmly taking Margaret by the arms. She thrashed and screamed, hurling curses at Claire and me, her voice echoing off the crystal chandelier until the heavy front doors closed behind her, cutting off the noise and restoring a profound, hard-earned silence to the estate.
