Chapter 10 - The True Home

The morning sun cast a golden glow across the manicured lawns of the Lake Forest estate as our private vehicle rolled through the wrought-iron gates.

The house looked different now. Not because the architecture had changed, but because the spirit within it had been completely reborn. The cold, sterile, intimidating atmosphere that my mother had cultivated for a decade was gone, replaced by the warm, inviting scent of fresh flowers, baby powder, and home-cooked meals prepared by our new, compassionate domestic staff.

As I stepped out of the car and opened the rear door, I gently scooped little Julian out of his car seat, cradling him securely against my chest, before offering my hand to Claire.

She stepped out, taking a deep breath of the crisp morning air, smiling as she looked up at the double oak front doors.

“It feels different,” Claire remarked softly, leaning against my shoulder as we walked up the stone steps together.

“It’s because it’s finally ours,” I replied, unlocking the front door and pushing it wide open.

There was no dining room table laden with excessive waste, no socialites gossiping in the corners, no cold shadows waiting in the foyer. Just a bright, beautiful hallway leading to a home filled with unconditional love, mutual respect, and a future unburdened by the past.

We walked into the living room, where a large, comfortable armchair sat by the sunlit bay window overlooking the garden. Claire sank into it with a contented sigh, and I gently placed Julian into her arms.

She looked down at him, her eyes shining with tears of pure joy, before looking up at me as I knelt beside her chair, wrapping my arms around both of them.

“We made it, Sebastian,” she whispered, resting her forehead against mine.

“We did, Claire,” I answered, smiling as our son let out a tiny, contented yawn, completely unaware of the battles we had fought to keep him safe. “We’re finally home.”
