Chapter 6 - Morning Light

The first rays of golden morning sunlight streamed through the hospital window, painting warm stripes across the pale green walls of the post-partum recovery suite. Outside, the city of Chicago was waking up to a crisp, clear Thursday morning, the rain from the previous night having washed the streets clean.

Eleanor woke up naturally, feeling the deep, restorative exhaustion of a mother who had just brought new life into the world. Her body felt sore, a heavy, aching reminder of the major surgery she had undergone just hours ago, but as soon as she shifted her weight, a soft coo from the bassinet beside her bed instantly chased away any lingering fatigue.

Caleb was already awake, sitting in the armchair with a paper cup of hospital coffee in one hand while peering down through the clear plastic walls of the bassinet with an expression of pure, unadulterated awe.

“Morning, sleepyhead,” Caleb whispered, looking over with a wide, radiant grin. “Look who decided to start her day early.”

Eleanor smiled, propping herself up slightly on her elbows. “Is she awake?”

“Oh, she’s wide awake and looking around like she owns the place,” Caleb laughed gently, reaching down to scoop Maya up with practiced, tender care. He carried the tiny bundle over to the bed and settled her gently into Eleanor’s waiting arms.

Maya’s eyes were open now—wide, dark, and remarkably focused. She wasn't crying; instead, she blinked sleepily against the soft morning light, her tiny mouth moving in an instinctive rooting motion.

“Good morning, my sweet girl,” Eleanor whispered, bringing her face close to Maya’s. She gently brushed the back of her knuckle against Maya’s cheek. The baby turned toward the touch immediately, letting out a soft, satisfied sigh.

Just then, a soft knock sounded at the door, and a cheerful nurse stepped inside carrying a tray of warm breakfast and a stack of morning charts.

“Good morning, Price family!” nurse Sarah—one of the night-shift nurses who had stayed past her shift to check on them—announced warmly. “How are our favorite new parents and our superstar baby doing this morning?”

“We’re doing wonderfully, Sarah,” Eleanor replied, beaming. “Maya slept almost four hours straight.”

“That’s fantastic! A model patient, just like her mom,” Sarah said, checking Eleanor’s IV site and taking her temperature with practiced efficiency. “Dr. Cole left word that he’s stopping by during his morning rounds in about an hour. He also wanted me to let you know that administration has already approved the protocol update for high-risk obstetric charting. Your feedback yesterday made waves.”

Eleanor felt a sudden swell of pride. Her voice hadn't just saved her own peace of mind in a crisis; it was going to protect other mothers down the road.

“That’s wonderful news,” Eleanor said softly, kissing the top of Maya’s dark hair.

As Sarah gathered her equipment and headed for the door, she paused with a warm smile. “Enjoy these quiet morning moments. Trust me, the visitors will be knocking down your door by noon.”

After Sarah left, Caleb pulled his chair closer to the bed, wrapping one arm around Eleanor’s shoulders while keeping his other hand resting gently on Maya’s tiny, blanket-wrapped feet.

“You know,” Caleb murmured softly, looking out the window at the bright morning sky, “yesterday evening was terrifying. But sitting here right now... it feels like everything in the universe finally fell into the exact right place.”

Eleanor leaned her head against Caleb’s shoulder, holding their daughter tightly between them. “It did,” she agreed softly. “It really did.”
