Chapter 5 - The Recovery Room

The recovery room was quiet, lit by soft, amber-toned wall sconces that cast a gentle glow over the clean white sheets. The frantic pace of the operating room felt like a lifetime away, though barely an hour had passed since Eleanor had been wheeled through those heavy double doors.
Eleanor lay propped up at a comfortable thirty-degree angle, her vital signs steadily ticking away on a monitor in the corner. The numbing medication from the spinal block was slowly wearing off, replaced by a dull, manageable ache across her lower abdomen, but the pain was entirely eclipsed by the warm, heavy bundle resting securely against her chest.
Maya was sleeping peacefully, swaddled tightly in a soft cotton blanket with only her tiny, rounded face exposed. Her breathing was soft and even, a gentle rhythm that matched the steady beat of Eleanor’s own heart.
Caleb sat in the vinyl armchair beside the bed, holding one of Eleanor’s hands in both of his, kissing her knuckles every few minutes as if needing physical proof that they were all safe and together.
“You were incredible,” Caleb whispered for the hundredth time, his eyes shining with unspent emotion. “When the monitor started dropping... El, I was so scared.”
“I was scared too,” Eleanor admitted softly, her gaze never leaving the tiny face resting against her collarbone. She shifted her arm slightly to support Maya’s head better, marveling at how delicate yet resilient her daughter was. “When they told us the room wasn't ready... I thought we were going to lose our window.”
The door to the recovery room clicked open softly, and Dr. Cole walked in. He had changed out of his blood-stained scrubs into a clean dark shirt and trousers, though the deep shadows beneath his eyes remained. He held a small clipboard tucked under his arm.
Eleanor looked up, her expression turning serious. “Dr. Cole.”
The doctor paused, raising a hand in a gentle, reassuring gesture as he approached the bed. “Don’t worry, Mrs. Price—or rather, congratulations again. I’m not here to talk about charts or hospital bureaucracy tonight.”
Eleanor let out a small, relieved breath. “Thank you. For moving as fast as you did when things went sideways.”
“You moved fast too,” Dr. Cole said honestly, pulling up a chair and sitting down near the foot of the bed. He looked down at the sleeping infant, a genuine, soft smile touching his lips. “She’s beautiful. Perfectly healthy, and her vitals are completely stable.”
“Thank you, Doctor,” Caleb said, standing up to shake Dr. Cole’s hand firmly. “I know things were chaotic, and... well, I know there was a mix-up with the paperwork earlier. We appreciate everything you and your team did.”
“That mix-up is something I’m going to personally review tomorrow morning,” Dr. Cole replied, his tone firm and professional. “Communication failures in high-risk scenarios are unacceptable. The fact that your chart was flagged incorrectly while you were actively contracting nearly cost us precious minutes. That protocol needs an overhaul, and I intend to make sure administration fixes it so no other patient goes through what you experienced tonight.”
Eleanor felt a warm wave of validation wash over her. For years, she had encountered medical professionals who brushed off her concerns or blamed her height for misunderstandings. Hearing a senior physician take accountability and vow to fix a systemic flaw was entirely unexpected, and deeply appreciated.
“I appreciate that,” Eleanor said quietly. “Thank you for listening.”
“It’s my job,” Dr. Cole said simply. He stood up, patted the edge of the mattress gently, and offered one last reassuring nod. “Get some rest, both of you. The pediatric team will be by in the morning for routine checks, but right now, just enjoy your daughter.”

As the doctor walked out, closing the door quietly behind him, the room settled back into a peaceful, cocoon-like silence.
Eleanor looked down at Maya, who let out a tiny sigh in her sleep and snuggled closer against her chest. The storm had passed, leaving behind a sky brilliant with stars.
