Chapter 4 - The First Cry

The sound cut through the heavy air of the operating room like a ray of brilliant sunlight piercing through a storm. It was high-pitched, resonant, and unmistakably alive—the defiant voice of a newborn demanding her place in the world.
Eleanor let out a ragged breath that turned into a sob of pure, overwhelming relief. The tears she had fought back for the past hour finally spilled over her lashes, tracking hot and fast down her temples into her hair.
Beside her, Caleb let out a broken, breathless laugh, burying his face in his hands for a fraction of a second before looking back down at the sterile field with wide, shining eyes.
“She’s crying, El,” Caleb choked out, his voice cracking with emotion as he leaned down to press a fervent kiss against her damp forehead. “She’s crying. She’s here.”
Dr. Cole hoisted the tiny, squirming form up slightly above the level of the drape, a subtle, proud smile breaking through the mask of exhaustion on his face. The infant was slick with vernix and amniotic fluid, her tiny limbs kicking with surprising vigor as she continued her loud, healthy protest against the cold air of the surgical suite.
“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Price,” Dr. Cole said warmly, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “You have a daughter.”
The neonatology team swarmed in instantly, taking the baby to the radiant warmer set up just a few feet away. Bright lights illuminated the small table as the pediatric nurse began gently drying the infant with warm towels, clearing her airway with a bulb syringe, and wrapping her snugly in a sterile blanket.
Eleanor craned her neck, straining against the restraint of the blood pressure cuffs and IV lines. “Is she okay? Let me see her.”
“She’s vigorous, Momma,” the pediatric nurse called out cheerfully, pausing to hold up a tiny, bundled package wrapped in pink-striped flannel. “Apgar scores are looking strong: eight at one minute, nine at five. She’s a fighter, just like her mother.”
Caleb hurried over to the warmer, his hands trembling as he peered down at the tiny face peeking out from the blankets. A mop of dark hair crowned her head, and two tiny fists waved feebly in the air. He felt a love so fierce and sudden it knocked the wind completely out of his lungs.
“Bring her here, please,” Eleanor pleaded softly, her heart aching to bridge the final physical distance between them.
Dr. Cole, having finished closing the uterine incision with meticulous care, stepped back from the table and nodded to the nurse. “Bring her over for a quick peek before we transfer Mrs. Price to recovery.”
The nurse carefully carried the swaddled bundle to the side of the operating table, lowering her so Eleanor could finally see her face clearly.
The baby’s eyes were tightly shut against the bright lights, her tiny rosebud lips pursed as she let out one final, soft squeak before settling down into a calm, rhythmic breathing pattern. Her face was perfect, flushed with healthy pink blood, utterly pristine.
Eleanor reached out with a trembling hand, her fingers gently brushing against the baby’s velvety cheek. The skin was impossibly soft, warm against her fingertips.

“Hello, little one,” Eleanor whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears and profound adoration. “Welcome to the world, Maya.”
Caleb looked from his wife to his newborn daughter, his heart swelling with a deep, abiding gratitude. The terrifying chaos of the past hour faded into the background, replaced by the quiet, radiant reality of their new beginning.
