Chapter 8 - The Sanctuary of Echoes

Liam’s mother, Sarah Brooks, sat in a chair nearby, watching her son with tears of immense pride in her eyes. When the police had called her two days ago to explain how her son’s extraordinary sensory abilities had saved a newborn baby's life, she had wept for hours.
Nora walked over to the window sill, cradling baby Sophie in her arms.
"Liam?" Nora said softly.
Liam didn't stop organizing his pencils, but his ears twitched, recognizing her voice.
"I want to show you someone," Nora whispered.
She gently tilted Sophie down so the baby was visible.
Liam paused his work. He slowly turned his head. His bright blue eyes locked onto baby Sophie’s face.
Sophie reached her tiny hand out from the yellow blanket. In her little fist, she was still clutching the tiny blue wooden block that Liam had given her in the warehouse—a token her mother had refused to take away from her.
Liam reached out one finger and very gently tapped the wooden block.
"The baby is up," Liam whispered, his voice clear, calm, and free of any sensory distress. "The mother is up. Everyone is up."
Nora wiped a tear from her cheek, smiling down at him. "Yes, Liam. Everyone is up. Everyone is safe."
Sarah stood up, placing her hands on Liam's shoulders. "The hospital board established a new sensory-friendly pediatric unit in the hospital today, Maya," Sarah said softly. "They’re naming it 'The Liam Brooks Early Intervention Center.' It’s dedicated to helping neurodivergent children communicate and process the world safely."
Maya smiled, walking over to join them. "It's the least this hospital could do for the hero who saved us all."

Liam looked at Maya, then at Nora, and finally at baby Sophie.
"The wheels go forward now," Liam said, placing the final purple pencil into its spot. "No more dark."
