Chapter 5 - Cold Blood and Deception

seasonal twilight filtered through the shattered skylights of the massive, abandoned industrial laundry hall. Rusted commercial washing drums loomed like ancient iron monoliths in the shadows.
In the center of the hall stood Dr. Marcus Vance. He was dressed in slick gray surgical scrubs beneath a heavy black overcoat. In his left hand, he held a sleek, titanium-encased medical transport box—the pressurized incubator holding baby Sophie. In his right hand, he held a sleek, suppressed 9mm pistol.
Standing beside him was an unexpected figure—a woman in a high-ranking hospital administrator's blazer.
It was Dr. Evelyn Reed, the Chief Medical Officer of the hospital.
Maya gasped. "Evelyn?!"
"Lower your weapon, Officer Reeves," Dr. Reed said coldly, her voice devoid of any warmth or morality. She held a heavy remote detonation device in her hand. "This building's old gas lines have been bypassed. If you fire a single shot, the spark will trigger a vapor explosion that will incinerate this entire block—including this precious baby."
Reeves hesitated, his gun hand wavering as he recognized the catastrophic risk.
"Evelyn... how could you?" Maya whispered, stepping into the open, her eyes wide with betrayal. "You were my mentor! You built the neonatal intensive care unit!"
"And do you have any idea how much that unit costs to run, Maya?" Evelyn spat back, her eyes cold and calculating. "The hospital is drowning in debt. The board was going to bankrupt us! Dr. Vance provided a solution. Private foreign investors pay tens of millions for specific, high-value genetic infants. One infant solves our operating deficit for three years!"
"You're selling human babies to fund a corporate budget?!" Nora screamed, trying to charge forward, but Denise caught her, holding her back with tears streaming down her face.
"Shut her up!" Vance barked, raising his silenced pistol toward Nora.
"NO!" Liam's voice shattered the tense air.
The boy did not hide. He did not cover his ears. He stepped out from behind Maya, walking directly into the open space between the police officer and the armed criminals.
Vance frowned, his gun shifting slightly toward the boy. "What is this? Why did you bring a ret--- child down here?"
Liam stopped ten feet from Vance. He looked not at the gun, nor at Vance's face. He looked directly at the titanium box in Vance's hand.
"The green light is flashing three times," Liam said in his flat, eerie, rhythmic voice. "Three flashes means the battery is at four percent. Four percent means thirty seconds of oxygen left."
Vance glanced down at the incubator control panel in momentary panic. "What?"
That split second of distraction was all Maya needed.
"NOW, REEVES!" Maya yelled.
Reeves didn't fire his gun. Instead, he lunged forward, tackling Dr. Evelyn Reed to the floor before she could depress the detonator switch. The heavy remote clattered across the filthy concrete floor.
Vance cursed, swinging his gun back toward Reeves, but Liam suddenly let out an ear-piercing, high-frequency scream—a pure, unfiltered sensory blast of pitch-perfect vocal resonance that echoed off the hollow iron washing drums.
The deafening sound reflected through the cavernous room, striking Vance's eardrums like a physical blow. Vance staggered back, wincing in agony and dropping his gun to cover his ears.
Maya sprinted forward like a mother lion protecting her cub. She launched herself at Vance, her heavy medical kit slamming hard into his chest.

Vance hit the floor hard, the titanium transport box slipping from his grip.
Nora dove across the concrete floor, catching the medical incubator in her arms before it could strike the hard ground, cradling it against her body with every ounce of motherly strength left in her soul.
