Chapter 6 - The Clockwork Conspiracy

The recovery was instantaneous, but the danger was far from over.

Vance rolled over, his face contorted in rage. He reached for his dropped pistol on the floor.

Before his fingers could touch the cold steel, Denise Holloway stepped up with a heavy iron pipe she had ripped from a nearby rack. With a cry of rage and decades of pent-up protective maternal fury, she brought the pipe down hard on Vance’s arm.

CRACK.

Vance screamed in agony as his wrist fractured, rolling onto his back, completely incapacitated.

Across the room, Reeves had successfully cuffed Dr. Evelyn Reed, securing the remote detonator safely in his pocket.

"Maya! The baby!" Nora shrieked, clutching the titanium box.

The alarm on the portable incubator was now shrilling a terrifying, continuous high-pitched tone. The oxygen digital readout was dropping rapidly: 12%... 8%... 4%...

"The seal was damaged when Vance fell!" Maya yelled, dropping to her knees beside Nora. She opened her emergency medical kit, ripping open a manual resuscitation bag and an infant oxygen mask connected to a portable tank.

"Get her out of the box!" Maya ordered.

Nora frantically unlatched the titanium housing. Inside lay tiny Sophie. Her tiny face was blue-tinged, her little chest barely moving, her premature lungs collapsing under the sudden atmospheric pressure change.

"She’s not breathing!" Nora sobbed wildly. "Maya, please! Save my baby!"

Maya remained laser-focused. "Denise, hold her head inline! Nora, keep her warm with your body heat!"

Maya gently placed the tiny clear silicone mask over Sophie’s nose and mouth. She began manual ventilation with surgical precision.

Squeeze... two, three... release.Squeeze... two, three... release.

"Come on, Sophie," Maya whispered, her own tears blurring her vision. "Come on, sweet girl. Fight. Fight like your mama fought for you."

Liam stood over them. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the blue wooden block from the toy set he had carried all the way from the hospital.

He leaned down and gently placed the wooden block into Sophie's tiny, closed fist.

"The blue door is open now," Liam whispered softly. "You can come home."

For three agonizing seconds, the room was dead silent save for the hiss of the oxygen tank.

Then, a tiny, raspy, miraculous cough emerged from the baby’s chest.

Sophie’s chest rose dramatically. Her tiny fingers curled tight around Liam’s wooden block.

A loud, furious, beautiful newborn cry filled the dusty industrial hall.

Nora burst into tears of overwhelming joy, pressing her forehead against her daughter's tiny head, smothering her with desperate kisses. "She’s breathing! Oh God, she’s breathing!"

Maya sat back on her heels, letting out a long, shuddering breath of profound relief. She looked up at Denise, who was weeping silently, wiping blood and dust from her forehead.

outside, the sudden roaring thrum of heavy tactical police helicopters echoed overhead, accompanied by the flashing red and blue lights of fifty police cruisers surrounding the warehouse.

The nightmare in the dark was finally over.
