Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Guest Wing

Dr. Bianchi lowered his voice, casting a cautious glance down the dim, narrow corridor of the staff quarters before stepping closer to Alessandro.
"Mr. Moretti, her white blood cell count is erratic, and her gums show signs of unusual bruising. More importantly, her vitals indicate a chronic, low-grade poisoning or systemic toxicity. It is subtle, but progressive."
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed, the cold steel returning to his gaze. "Poisoning? In my home?"
"Not necessarily a lethal dose meant to kill quickly," Dr. Bianchi said carefully, adjusting his leather medical bag. "It could be heavy metal exposure, or something cumulative added over weeks. Without a full hospital screening and toxicology panel, I cannot be certain. But I am certain of this: she has been forced to work through severe physical collapse. Her body is giving out."
Alessandro looked past the doctor into the small room where Sophia lay asleep, with little Emma curled safely against her blanket.
"Do it," Alessandro said quietly. "Get the panel. Bring whatever specialists you need. Do it here, in the main wing. Move them both to the guest suite on the second floor immediately."
"The second floor?" Dr. Bianchi blinked, surprised. The guest suite was reserved for high-ranking political figures, visiting capos, or family. "Are you sure, Alessandro? The staff quarters—"
"Are no longer acceptable," Alessandro cut him off, his voice dropping into that low, flat register that always made grown men look at their shoes. "Do as I say, Doctor. And I want those blood results by morning."
Within the hour, Sophia and Emma were transferred.
Sophia protested weakly when two of Alessandro’s most trusted household guards carefully lifted her on a stretcher, but she was too weak to resist. Emma, on the other hand, wide-eyed and clutching a battered plush bear, looked around the cavernous guest suite—with its crystal chandelier, velvet drapes, and king-sized bed—as if she had been transported to a palace in a fairy tale.
Alessandro stood by the tall arched window, watching the city lights flicker across the Chicago skyline.
For two years, Sophia Carter had lived under his roof, invisible yet integral. She managed the laundry of a man who commanded an empire, a man who prided himself on seeing everything, knowing everything, and controlling every variable within his territory.
Yet he hadn't noticed that a young mother was slowly being poisoned or worked to death under his own floorboards.
His phone buzzed in his pocket.
He pulled it out.
The screen flashed a single name: Dante.
Dante Vance.
His consigliere. His right hand. The man who handled the logistics, audited the payroll, supervised the estate’s domestic staff, and managed every penny and person that entered or left the Moretti compound. The man Alessandro trusted more than his own blood.
Alessandro swiped to answer.
"Boss," Dante's voice came through smoothly, calm and professional as always. "I heard a commotion in the guest wing. Is everything alright? Do you need me to clear out any uninvited guests?"
"No," Alessandro said, his voice dangerously even. "Movements have changed. Sophia Carter is sick. She and her daughter have been moved to the second-floor guest suite."
There was a brief pause on the line—just a fraction of a second too long.
"Ah, the housekeeper," Dante said, recovering seamlessly. "A shame. I’ll have human resources process a medical stipend and arrange a replacement for her duties tomorrow morning. We can't have sick staff handling your quarters."
Alessandro stared at his own reflection in the dark glass of the window.
"She wasn't just sick, Dante."
"Oh?"
"Dr. Bianchi suspects toxicity. Cumulative poisoning."
Another pause. This time, longer.
"That is... concerning," Dante said, his tone dropping into a pitch of professional gravity. "An accident with cleaning chemicals, perhaps? Some domestic staff are careless with industrial detergents."
"Perhaps," Alessandro replied softly. "Or perhaps someone wanted her out of the way. Get over to the estate tonight. I want to review the staff payroll records, the domestic oversight logs, and every supply requisition order from the past six months. Personally."
"Tonight, Boss?" Dante asked, a hint of fatigue in his voice. "It’s past midnight. I can have the files on your desk by nine tomorrow."
"I said tonight, Dante."
Alessandro hung up before the consigliere could answer.
He slid the phone back into his pocket, turned away from the window, and walked softly toward the adjoining bedroom. Through the slightly open door, he saw Sophia resting comfortably under heavy down blankets, her color slowly returning under Dr. Bianchi’s attentive care. Emma lay sound asleep on a cot pulled up beside her mother, clutching a corner of the blanket.
Alessandro stood in the shadows, his mind racing.
If Sophia was being poisoned, it wasn't random. In his world, nothing was ever random. And if the supply chain of his own household had been compromised, it meant the vulnerability originated from the inside.
