Chapter 7 - The Tables Have Turned

Richard Vance sat in his suburban living room, sweating profusely. His phone had been ringing nonstop for hours. Every bank account was frozen. His credit cards were maxed out or declined. His boss had fired him via text message, citing 'catastrophic liabilities,' and Vanessa—the moment she heard his finances had collapsed—had blocked his number and deleted every trace of him from her social media accounts.
Worse still, the viral video that was supposed to humiliate Maya had suddenly backfired. Internet sleuths, digging deeper into Richard's background, had uncovered his public shaming of his wife, leading to internet backlash, doxxing, and furious crowds gathering outside his office building.
Suddenly, the front door unlocked.
Richard jumped up, expecting police officers or bill collectors. Instead, two men in sharp black suits stepped into the hallway, flanking the doorway.
And then, walked in Maya.
She wasn't wearing her usual faded apron or the cheap clothes Richard had forced her to budget for. She wore a tailored black pantsuit, her hair immaculate, her posture radiating absolute power. On her finger gleamed a silver ring engraved with an orchid.
Richard stared at her in utter disbelief, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"M-Maya?" Richard stammered, stepping backward. "What is this? Where have you been? The cops... the banks... they froze everything! My accounts are empty! What did you do?!"
Maya walked slowly into the living room, looking around at the sterile, impersonal furniture that she had spent years trying to make feel like a home.
"You told me I wouldn't last a week without you, Richard," Maya said calmly, her voice echoing in the quiet room. "You told me I was just a waitress with no house, no car, and no one waiting for me."
"I... I was just joking!" Richard laughed nervously, his voice cracking with panic as he tried his usual manipulation tactic. "You know how I get when I'm stressed! Come on, Maya, don't be dramatic. Let's talk about this. Where's Lily?"
"Lily is safe," Maya said coldly. "Somewhere you will never, ever be allowed to see her again."
Richard’s panic turned to blind fury. He stepped forward, his face twisting into the ugly, abusive sneer Maya knew all too well. "You ungrateful bitch! You think you can just walk out on me? You're nothing without me! Who do you think you are?!"
He raised his hand, instinctively moving to strike her the way he had done countless times before when she defied him.
Before his hand could even move an inch, Julian Sterling stepped out from the shadows of the hallway. With terrifying speed and precision, Julian grabbed Richard’s wrist, twisting it upward with enough force to make Richard scream out in agony.
"Touch her again," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low, "and I will ensure you spend the rest of your natural life breaking rocks in a federal penitentiary."
Richard collapsed to his knees, clutching his wrist, sobbing in pain and humiliation. "Who are you?! What do you want?!"
Julian released his grip, stepping back as Maya walked forward and looked down at the man who had terrorized her for years.

"Richard," Maya said softly. "You wanted to know who I am? Meet the majority shareholder and owner of Sterling Global Industries. The company that currently holds the mortgage on this house, the car you drive, and every single asset your family ever dreamed of owning."
Richard looked up, his eyes wide with absolute, crushing horror. He realized the terrifying truth—he hadn't married a helpless waitress. He had destroyed the one person who could wipe him off the face of the earth with a single signature.
