Chapter 5 - The Empress Takes Her Throne

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Sterling Global Industries was a monument to corporate arrogance. Mahogany walls, floor-to-ceiling glass windows framing the Manhattan skyline, and a massive conference table surrounded by leather chairs where ten board members sat in tense, hushed debate.

At the head of the table sat CEO Jonathan Sterling—no relation to Arthur, but rather a ruthless corporate shark installed by the board decades ago to manage the estate in the family's supposed absence.

"This is an unmitigated disaster," Jonathan snapped, slamming his hand on the table. "Some unknown entity bought up a controlling block of shares overnight, and our legal department is completely paralyzed! Who the hell authorized this hostile takeover?"

Before anyone could answer, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Security guards rushed forward to block the entrance, but they stopped dead in their tracks as Julian Sterling stepped into the room, holding the door wide open.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Julian said smoothly, stepping aside.

All eyes turned to the doorway.

A woman walked in.

She wore a sharp, tailored obsidian-black pantsuit that commanded the room the moment she crossed the threshold. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, flawless bun, and her expression was an impenetrable mask of absolute composure. She didn't look like a downtrodden waitress from Long Island. She looked like an empress reclaiming her throne.

Jonathan stood up, his face flushing with anger. "What is the meaning of this? Unauthorized personnel are not permitted in the boardroom! Security, throw them out!"

None of the security guards moved. They couldn't—they had already received direct clearance from the building's primary owner.

Maya walked slowly to the head of the table, pulling out the chair directly opposite Jonathan. She didn't sit down right away. She placed both hands flat on the polished mahogany and looked around the room, meeting the gaze of every single terrified board member.

"You can sit down, Jonathan," Maya said, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the silent room. "In fact, all of you should sit. You're going to need to be comfortable for what comes next."

Jonathan sneered, crossing his arms. "Who do you think you are, walking in here and barking orders? Throw this lunatic out right now!"

Maya slowly reached into her pocket, pulled out a small silver chain, and laid the antique silver ring engraved with an orchid directly in the center of the table.

The color instantly drained from Jonathan’s face. His eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror as he stared at the ring.

"That... that's impossible," Jonathan stammered, grabbing the edge of the table to steady himself. "The lineage ended twenty-five years ago! Elena is dead!"

"Elena was my mother," Maya said softly, her voice carrying a chilling weight. "And I am Maya Sterling, the sole granddaughter of Arthur Sterling, and the rightful majority owner of fifty-one percent of this corporation."

She pulled out a certified legal document bearing the official seal of the New York State Supreme Court and slid it across the mahogany table.

"Meeting called to order," Maya said, finally pulling out her chair and sitting down. "Item number one on the agenda: The immediate termination of every executive who conspired to conceal my family's heritage and embezzle company funds."
