Chapter 3 - The First Ripple of Retribution

Richard Vance woke up late, nursing a mild hangover and a sense of absolute invincibility. The house was blissfully quiet. Maya was gone, exactly as he had predicted, which meant he didn't have to listen to her nagging about his spending or his late nights with Vanessa.

He strolled into the kitchen, expecting to find coffee waiting, only to find the counters empty.

"Maya!" he yelled lazily. Then he remembered. "Right. The runaway waitress."

He chuckled, pulling out his phone to check the video metrics. The views had surpassed two million. Brands were already reaching out to Vanessa’s DMs for sponsorships. Richard felt a swell of pride. He was dating an influencer, and he had successfully pruned the dead weight from his life.

An hour later, Richard arrived at his mid-level marketing firm in downtown Manhattan, expecting a normal Monday morning. Instead, he found his coworkers huddled around the water cooler, whispering and staring at him sideways.

As Richard walked past, his supervisor, Mr. Henderson, stepped out of his corner office. His face was pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and disgust.

"Richard. My office. Now."

Closing the door behind them, Henderson didn't offer Richard a seat. He slammed a tablet onto the desk. The screen displayed a formal, highly intimidating legal notice bearing the crest of Sterling Global Industries' primary legal counsel.

"What is this?" Richard asked, waving a hand dismissively. "Some corporate spam?"

"Sit down, you idiot," Henderson hissed, his voice trembling. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done?"

"Me? I didn't do anything! My wife threw a fit at my kid's birthday, made a scene, and walked out. If anything, I'm the victim of a hysterical woman—"

"Your wife," Henderson interrupted, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper, "is currently being represented by Sterling Global’s elite counsel. Within the last hour, our firm received an immediate notice of contract termination from them. They were our largest corporate client, accounting for forty percent of our annual revenue. And when I called their executive office to ask why, do you know what they told me?"

Richard’s smug smile faltered. "What?"

"They told me," Henderson said, leaning in close, "that the board insulted, degraded, and recorded harassment against the sole granddaughter and legal heir to the entire Sterling fortune. They didn't just cancel the contract, Richard. They are suing our firm into bankruptcy for professional association with a liability."

Richard laughed nervously, though a cold bead of sweat formed on his neck. "Heir? To Sterling? Are you out of your mind? Maya works at a diner! She’s a waitress! She lives in a rented townhouse because I let her!"

"Not anymore," the office door burst open, and Richard's secretary rushed in, breathless. "Mr. Henderson! You need to see the live financial feeds. Sterling Global’s stock just surged, and a massive hostile takeover has been initiated. Someone bought up every single outstanding share of our parent company. The new controlling owner... they just filed emergency injunctions against every major asset associated with Richard's family name."

Richard’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He pulled it out. It was a bank alert: Your primary checking account has been frozen due to a court-ordered asset freeze.

Another notification popped up: Your corporate credit card has been declined.

Before Richard could process the cascading disaster, the glass doors of the office lobby shattered with the sound of heavy footsteps. Four men in immaculate charcoal suits walked into the bullpen, led by a tall, striking man with piercing grey eyes and an expression carved from granite—Julian Sterling.

Julian didn't look at Henderson. He didn't look at the terrified coworkers. His eyes locked straight onto Richard Vance, who stood frozen in the doorway of his boss's office.

"Richard Vance?" Julian’s voice cut through the silent office like a scalpel.

Richard swallowed hard, his voice shaking. "Who... who are you?"

"I am the man who is going to dismantle your entire existence," Julian said calmly, stepping forward until he was inches away. "Piece by piece. Starting with the clothes on your back."
