Part 7: The Final Decree

Spring bloomed fully across the city, painting the parks in vibrant shades of green and gold. The penthouse was filled with the soft, sweet sounds of cooing and laughter as Emma and Elise reached their two-month milestone. They were thriving—active, bright-eyed, and surrounded by unconditional love and absolute security.
The legal proceedings moved with the speed and precision of a well-oiled machine. Without financial resources or allies, Daniel’s defense crumbled completely. Confronted with the overwhelming mountain of forensic evidence, his court-appointed public defender advised him to accept a plea bargain.
In exchange for a guilty plea on charges of corporate fraud, forgery, and reckless endangerment, Daniel received a sentence of eight years in federal prison, with no possibility of parole for the first five.
Vivian, facing similar charges of conspiracy and accessory to fraud, accepted a plea deal that stripped her of her remaining social standing, her assets, and her freedom, resulting in a three-year suspended sentence and mandatory community service—a sentence far more agonizing for a woman of her pride than actual prison time.
Serena had quietly disappeared from the city, her social media accounts deleted, her ambitions shattered by the very greed that had led her to align with Daniel in the first place.
I sat at my grand mahogany desk in the executive office at Vance Tower, reviewing the quarterly philanthropic initiative reports. The company had launched a new foundation dedicated to supporting mothers and infants facing domestic and financial abuse—a cause I now championed with fierce, personal dedication.
Rachel walked into the office, holding a thick, freshly bound legal portfolio. She placed it gently on the desk with a bright smile.
“It’s officially done, Eleanor,” Rachel said. “The final decree has been signed by Judge Alistair. The divorce is absolute, all assets are securely re-cataloged under your sole proprietorship, and Daniel’s parental rights have been entirely terminated by court order. The girls carry your name now—and yours alone.”
I looked down at the document, tracing my finger over the official seal. Vance. My daughters were entirely safe, protected by a fortress of legal, financial, and emotional strength that no one would ever be able to penetrate again.

“Thank you, Rachel,” I said, looking up with genuine gratitude. “For everything. You didn’t just act as my lawyer; you stood by me in the dark.”
“That’s what family and true partners do,” Rachel replied warmly. “Besides, watching you reclaim your empire was the highlight of my career.”
