Part 5: The Collapse of the Alliance

Three days after Daniel’s ouster, the media storm broke wide open. Financial tabloids and mainstream news outlets alike seized on the downfall of the Sterling-Vance marriage. Headlines screamed: From Fairy Tale Wedding to Frozen Exile: The Spectacular Fall of Daniel Sterling, and Vance Heiress Strikes Back: Multi-Million Dollar Fraud Probe Rocks Corporate Elite.
I sat in the sunlit nursery of my downtown penthouse—a secure, high-rise sanctuary that Daniel had never even known I owned—feeding Emma and Elise. They were growing stronger every day, their tiny fingers curling around mine with fierce vitality.
My phone buzzed continuously on the side table. It was a stream of frantic messages from Vivian.
Eleanor, answer me right now! You’ve gone too far. They’ve frozen my cards, and the staff at the country club turned me away! Call off your lawyers this instant, or you’ll regret the day you crossed the Sterling family.
Eleanor, be reasonable. Daniel made a few mistakes, but we can settle this quietly. If you humiliate us publicly, our social circle will destroy you.
I archived her messages without a single reply. Vivian had spent thirty years looking down her nose at everyone around her, secure in the belief that her family name and social standing made her untouchable. She didn't realize that in the modern world, real power belonged to those who actually owned the capital—and that capital had always belonged to the Vance family, not the fading, debt-ridden Sterling legacy.
A soft knock came at the door, and Rachel walked in, carrying a fresh cup of coffee and a thick legal file.
“You look peaceful,” Rachel noted, smiling as she glanced at the twins. “Considering you’re in the middle of a corporate war.”
“They keep me grounded,” I replied softly, kissing the top of Elise’s head before placing her gently in her crib. I turned to Rachel. “What’s the update on Vivian and Serena?”
Rachel’s smile turned sharp. “Oh, it’s getting better by the hour. Serena realized that Daniel is completely broke and facing up to fifteen years in federal prison for wire fraud and forgery. She walked into the district attorney’s office yesterday afternoon with a complete flash drive of recorded phone calls, text messages, and financial ledgers proving that Vivian actively helped orchestrate the asset-siphoning scheme.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Serena turned on them?”
“In a heartbeat,” Rachel chuckled, opening her file. “Serena was never in love with Daniel; she was in love with his supposed wealth. Once she realized Daniel’s personal accounts were empty and he was legally barred from touching Vance funds, she decided her best self-preservation strategy was turning state’s witness in exchange for immunity. She gave the prosecutors everything—including proof that Vivian forged the initial trust amendments two years ago.”
“Greed is a very predictable flaw,” I remarked calmly.
“Indeed,” Rachel said. “And as for Vivian, she tried to liquidate her private jewelry collection to pay for a high-priced defense attorney this morning. Unfortunately for her, our forensic accountants traced the provenance of those jewels back to Vance family heirlooms that were gifted conditionally. We slapped an immediate emergency seizure order on the safe deposit box. She’s currently sitting in a holding room at the precinct, screaming about her civil rights while her society friends block her phone numbers.”
“Karma is remarkably efficient when properly funded,” I said, walking over to the desk. “What about the divorce proceedings?”
“Filed and moving forward on expedited grounds due to documented domestic abandonment, physical endangerment during the postpartum period, and financial fraud,” Rachel said. “Daniel’s legal team tried to file a counter-suit claiming mental distress and demanding spousal support and shared custody of the twins.”
My eyes narrowed. “Shared custody of my daughters?”

“Throw it out the window,” Rachel reassured me instantly. “Judge Alistair laughed them out of chambers. Between the police report from the night you were locked out, the medical records detailing your emergency delivery, and the mountain of evidence proving Daniel and Vivian attempted to abandon you and newborns in freezing temperatures, no family court judge in the country is going to grant him unsupervised visitation, let alone custody. We are pushing for complete termination of his parental rights based on endangerment and abandonment.”
“Good,” I said firmly. “I want my daughters protected completely and permanently.”
