Part 2: The Arrival of Justice

The wail of sirens cut through the winter night like a blade, slicing right through the festive atmosphere leaking from the mansion. The twin beams of a police cruiser swept across the frozen iron gates, followed instantly by the bulky silhouette of a private ambulance.
Inside the house, the music cut off abruptly.
I watched through the frosted glass as Daniel’s smirk dissolved into sudden confusion. He pulled the heavy mahogany door open just as two uniformed officers strode past the snowbanks, flanked by my attorney, Rachel Vance. Rachel looked like an avenging angel in a tailored black wool coat, her silver-streaked hair tied back neatly, holding a sleek leather briefcase like a shield.
“Officer, thank god,” Daniel barked, stepping forward with his best aggrieved-husband expression. “My wife has suffered a severe postpartum psychotic break. She ran outside with our newborns in the middle of the night. You need to take her to a psychiatric ward immediately.”
Vivian hurried up behind him, dabbing at imaginary tears. “We tried to stop her, officer! She’s completely unhinged. She attacked us!”
Serena hovered in the background, peering over Daniel’s shoulder with a look of feigned concern that didn’t quite mask her triumphant grin.
Rachel didn’t even look at Daniel. She walked straight past him, her eyes locking onto me. In two swift strides, she was by my side, unbuttoning her own expensive cashmere overcoat and wrapping it around my shoulders, tucking the edges carefully around Emma and Elise.
“Eleanor,” Rachel said, her voice steady and warm. “Let’s get you and the girls into the medical unit right now.”
“Hold on a second,” the lead police officer said, stepping between Daniel and us. He glanced down at my bare, bleeding feet, then up at Daniel’s warm cashmere sweater. “Mr. Sterling? Are these your wife and newborn children?”
“Yes, but—as I said—she’s unstable,” Daniel insisted, his voice rising in panicked volume. “She needs to be committed. And I want my children back inside where it’s safe.”
“Unstable?” Rachel’s voice cut through the cold air like ice. She snapped open her briefcase, pulling out a thick sheaf of laminated documents. “Officer, my name is Rachel Vance. I am senior partner at Vance & Sterling Legal Counsel. Wait—let me correct that. Vance & Associates. Mr. Sterling’s name is being removed from the firm as of midnight.”
Daniel scoffed, though a flicker of unease crossed his face. “What are you talking about, Rachel? You’re our family lawyer. You represent both of us.”
“I represent Eleanor Vance-Sterling, sole heiress to the Vance industrial empire, and the primary benefactor of the trusts that currently fund your entire lifestyle, Daniel,” Rachel replied crisply. She turned to the officer. “We have an active domestic exclusion order, backed by emergency custody filings signed by Judge Alistair tonight. Furthermore, we are filing immediate charges of reckless endangerment, domestic abuse, and financial fraud.”
Daniel’s face drained of color. “Fraud? What fraud? She signed those papers!”
“She signed nothing of the sort,” Rachel said, stepping forward and handing a certified forensic document examiner’s report to the officer. “Mr. Sterling forged my client’s signature on three separate corporate asset transfers totaling forty-five million dollars, attempting to strip her of her holdings while she was incapacitated in the maternity ward.”
“That’s a lie!” Daniel roared, lunging forward.
Two officers immediately stepped in, pinning his arms behind his back with practiced efficiency. The metal of handcuffs clicked in the cold night air.
Vivian shrieked, dropping her wineglass. It shattered against the marble porch, the red liquid pooling like blood in the snow. “You can’t arrest him! Do you know who we are? We are social royalty! Serena, call our contacts!”
Serena fumbled with her phone, her face pale. “Daniel… what is happening?”
I looked down at my daughters, who were sleeping soundly now, insulated by Rachel’s coat and the warmth of my chest. I raised my head, looking straight into Daniel’s wide, terrified eyes.
“You said the house was yours,” I said softly, my voice carrying clearly across the courtyard. “You said the money was mine. But you forgot one crucial detail, Daniel.”

He stared at me, breathless and trembling.
“I built this empire,” I whispered. “And today, I’m taking it all back.”
