Chapter 7 - The Reunion of Hearts

Tears welled up in Elena’s eyes as she dropped to her knees right in front of the two girls.

"Nell... Nora..." Elena choked out, her hands shaking as she reached out. "My babies... Oh, my sweet babies."

At first, Nell and Nora backed away, hiding behind Arthur’s legs. For five-year-olds who had spent days believing they were completely alone in the world, the concept of a mother returning from the dead was too overwhelming to process instantly.

"It's okay," Arthur whispered softly, looking down at them with infinite gentleness. "She's your mother. She's been looking for you everywhere."

Hearing Arthur’s reassurance, Nell slowly took a tentative step forward. Elena didn't rush them; she knelt patiently with her arms open wide.

With a small sob, Nell launched herself forward into her mother's arms, and a second later, Nora joined her. The three of them collapsed onto the wooden floorboards in a tight, weeping embrace, wrapped in a tangle of pink wool sweaters and tears of pure joy.

Arthur stood quietly to the side, feeling a sudden, heavy lump in his throat. He looked away, blinking rapidly against his own rising tears. This is how it should be, he told himself. They belong with their mother. They have their real family back.

After a long, emotional reunion, Elena gently wiped her tears, stood up, and turned to Arthur. She took both of his hands in hers, her face glowing with profound gratitude.

"Professor Whitmore," Elena said, her voice thick with emotion. "Words cannot express what you have done. Marcus told the family that the girls died in a nursery fire five years ago, right after my husband's plane crash. I never believed him, but I had no proof, no power, and his security team kept me under constant surveillance. You... you saved my children's lives."

"I just did what any human being would do," Arthur replied softly, offering a humble smile. "They are remarkable little girls."

Elena turned back to Nell and Nora, who were clinging tightly to her coat, but kept glancing back at Arthur with wide, anxious eyes.

"Professor," Elena said, turning back to him with a warm, knowing look. "My daughters seem to have adopted you. And frankly... I don't think they're ready to let go of their hero quite yet. And neither am I, if you'll allow us."

Arthur raised an eyebrow, surprised. "What do you mean?"

"The Vance estate is massive, cold, and filled with painful memories," Elena smiled gently. "And my girls need stability, warmth, and someone who reads them fairy tales by the fireplace. If you'll have us... my home is your home. Or better yet... why don't we make this house our home together?"

Nell and Nora beamed, their faces lighting up with hopeful smiles as they looked at Arthur.
