Chapter 6 - The Turn of the Tide

The silence in the living room was so thick it could have been sliced with a knife.

Captain Harris looked from the federal prosecutor to Marcus Vance, his face turning pale. "Ma'am... federal marshals? This is a local domestic welfare call—"

"This is a federal corruption sweep, Captain," the prosecutor interrupted sharply, not even glancing at the local police officer. She motioned to the marshals, who instantly stepped forward, gently but firmly placing steel handcuffs around Marcus Vance’s wrists.

"You can't do this!" Marcus snarled, straining against the cuffs, his polished demeanor cracking to reveal a desperate, cornered animal. "I am the head of Vance Corp! This is a setup! That old man is senile!"

"We have the financial wire transfers, Marcus," the prosecutor replied coldly, holding up a tablet displaying digital records. "We have the offshore accounts where you funneled the trust funds after staging the disappearance of Jonathan’s daughters. And more importantly... we have federal whistleblowers from your own security detail who confessed to leaving those little girls in a box to freeze."

At the mention of the girls, Arthur slowly walked over to the wooden window seat. He reached down, unlatched the heavy lid, and slowly lifted it.

Two pairs of large, terrified brown eyes looked up at him.

"It's okay, girls," Arthur said softly, kneeling down and extending his hands. "You can come out now. The bad men are gone."

Nell slowly climbed out first, turning back immediately to help Nora out of the chest. They stepped onto the floor, their gazes locking onto Marcus Vance standing in handcuffs near the doorway.

Marcus glared at them with a look of pure, unadulterated venom. But as he looked down, he noticed something else—the federal prosecutor was staring at him with a look of absolute triumph.

"Take him away," the prosecutor ordered the marshals.

As Marcus was dragged out of the house, kicking and shouting curses, the local captain quietly slipped out behind him, realizing his career in the pocket of Vance Corp was effectively over.

The federal prosecutor turned her attention to Arthur and the two little girls. She offered a warm, professional smile, though her eyes were filled with deep emotion.

"Professor Whitmore?" she asked gently.

"Yes," Arthur said, standing up and instinctively placing a protective hand on Nell’s shoulder.

"I am Special Prosecutor Elena Vance," she introduced herself, extending a hand.

Arthur blinked in surprise. "Vance? Are you—?"

May you like

"Jonathan’s widow," Elena said softly, her voice trembling slightly as she looked down at the two identical girls. "And these... these are my daughters. Nell and Nora."

The room seemed to spin slightly for Arthur. The mother. The mother they thought had abandoned them.
