Chapter 4 - The Archive of Secrets

The night was heavy with tension. Arthur didn't sleep a wink. He sat in his armchair by the window, a heavy brass fireplace poker resting against the armrest within arm's reach. The threat from Marcus Vance echoed in his mind like a ticking clock. Legal orders. The Vance Corporation. Arthur knew the name well; it was a multinational conglomerate with tentacles in real estate, pharmaceuticals, and security tech. Marcus Vance was a billionaire titan who viewed human beings as collateral damage on a balance sheet.

Around 3:00 AM, the quiet of the house was broken by a soft rustle. Arthur turned his head. Nell and Nora had crept out of the living room and were standing near his chair.

"Can't sleep?" Arthur asked softly, lowering the poker and holding out his arms.

They crawled up onto the armchair, squeezing in beside him. Nora rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, rhythmic thump of his heart.

"Will they take us to the dark room?" Nora whispered, her voice barely audible.

Arthur stroked her fine brown hair. "What dark room, sweetie?"

"The place where they kept us," Nell answered, her voice cold and hollow, devoid of childhood warmth. "Where the men in suits give us the bitter medicine that makes us sleepy. They said we have to be quiet. They said nobody would ever look for us in a box."

Arthur felt a sickening churn in his stomach. They weren't just abandoned; they had been hidden. Kidnapped, perhaps, or locked away by someone within the Vance family eager to eliminate them as heirs to the corporate empire. The realization made his blood run cold. Marcus Vance hadn't lost them in a blackout—he had tried to dispose of them, and when they survived or escaped into the snow, he was now desperately trying to clean up his loose ends.

"Listen to me," Arthur said, his voice ringing with fierce determination. "Nobody is taking you back to a dark room. Tomorrow morning, we are going to fight back. Not with fists, but with truth."

"How?" Nell asked, looking up with a spark of hope in her eyes.

"I used to be a historian," Arthur smiled gently, tapping the side of his nose. "And historians know how to dig up buried secrets. Marcus Vance thinks he owns the law, but he forgot one thing: paper trails last longer than billionaires."

Dawn broke with a pale, bruised sky. Arthur wasted no time. He booted up his old desktop computer—a dusty machine that hummed and rattled like a steam train—and connected to his university digital archives and public legal registries.

For hours, fueled by black coffee and sheer adrenaline, Arthur dove into the corporate history of the Vance empire. He searched probate records, birth certificates, and corporate filings from five years ago.

Nell and Nora sat quietly beside him, watching the green lines of text scroll across the glowing monitor.

"Got you," Arthur muttered under his breath around noon.

He found a buried file: the birth certificates of identical twin girls, daughters of Jonathan Vance—Marcus’s younger brother and former CEO of Vance Corp, who had died under mysterious circumstances in a private plane crash five years ago. The girls were the legitimate majority shareholders of the entire corporation, standing directly in the path of Marcus’s hostile takeover and absolute control.

Marcus had staged their disappearance to declare them legally dead, allowing him to seize their multi-billion-dollar trust.

"He stole everything from you," Arthur said, staring at the screen in disbelief. "And he tried to erase you."

Before Arthur could print the documents, a loud, violent pounding echoed from the front door. It wasn't Marcus this time. It was heavier, more official.

"Open up! Police department! We have a warrant to search the premises and take custody of abducted minors!"

Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs. Marcus had moved faster than expected, weaponizing the local precinct through bribery and influence.

"Hide!" Arthur whispered urgently to the girls, pointing toward the old wooden storage chest beneath the window seat. "Get inside, pull the latch, and do not make a sound, no matter what you hear. Do you understand?"

Nell nodded fiercely, pulling Nora with her. They squeezed into the chest, and the heavy lid clicked shut.

May you like

Arthur took a deep breath, walked down the hallway, and threw the front door wide open.

Standing on the porch were two local police officers flanked by Marcus Vance himself, wearing a triumphant, shark-like grin.
