Chapter 7 - Safe Haven

"Get him onto the couch! Now!" Claire barked at Marcus and another guard who had rushed into the house when they heard the noise.

Together, they lifted Dante’s heavy frame and laid him down on the wide fabric sofa in the living room. Claire barked orders like she was back in the ER, demanding clean towels, warm water, and her medical bag from her car.

Kate gently led a wide-eyed Mia upstairs to her bedroom, keeping her away from the bloody scene, while Claire cut open Dante’s shirt.

"The stitches opened," Claire muttered, her hands moving with practiced, brilliant speed as she cleaned the wound and applied fresh pressure dressings. "He's severely dehydrated and running a low-grade fever."

Marcus stood nearby, his hands folded in front of him, watching the doctor work on his boss. "He refused to stay in the hospital, ma'am. When he heard you and the child were in danger, nothing on Earth could have held him in that room."

Claire paused, looking down at Dante’s pale, unconscious face. The sharp edge of her anger was beginning to melt, replaced by a deep, confusing ache in her chest. For six years, she had believed he had simply abandoned her when things got tough. But seeing him throw himself into danger, bleeding out just to reach Mia, had shattered her belief in his coldness.

"Who were those men outside?" Claire asked softly, without looking up as she tied off the bandage.

"Nikolai Petrov’s men," Marcus replied grimly. "Petrov has been trying to take over Dante’s shipping routes for three years. He knew Dante was shot and tried to find leverage to force Dante into surrendering his assets. They tracked your medical records from six years ago, connected you to him, and came to see if you were a vulnerability."

"I am not a vulnerability," Claire said coldly, standing up and washing her hands in the sink.

"With all respect, Dr. Callahan," Marcus said quietly, "to a man like Dante Moretti, you and that little girl are the only things in this world that matter. That makes you his greatest strength... and his most dangerous weakness."

By midnight, the house was secure. Marcus stationed four guards discreetly outside around the perimeter of the property, ensuring total darkness and absolute security.

Claire sat in the armchair beside the couch, holding a warm cup of tea she had no intention of drinking. The soft, rhythmic breathing of Dante was the only sound in the living room.

Around 2:00 AM, Dante stirred. He let out a low groan, his dark eyes fluttering open. He looked around the dimly lit living room, confused, before his gaze settled on Claire sitting nearby.

"Claire..." he rasped.

"Don't try to move," Claire said quietly, getting up and handing him a glass of water with a straw. "I re-stitched your chest. If you open them again, I'm taking you back to the hospital and chaining you to the bed."

Dante drank greedily, then sank back into the pillows, his dark eyes never leaving her face.

"She's beautiful, Claire," Dante whispered, a brilliant, genuine smile touching his lips—the first real smile Claire had seen on his face in six years. "She has your kindness. And your bravery."

"She has your stubbornness," Claire countered, though her tone lacked any malice. She sat on the edge of the coffee table near him. "Dante... what happens now? You can't live like this. We can't live like this."

Dante’s smile faded, replaced by a heavy, solemn resolve. He reached out and gently took her hand. This time, Claire didn't pull away. His hand was warm, calloused, and familiar.

"Six years ago, I thought I could clean up my father's empire and walk away," Dante said softly. "I thought it would take a few months. But the mud was deeper than I imagined. Every time I tried to step out, someone threatened to burn everything down. So I chose to stay in the dark, to keep the monsters away from you."

"And look where it brought us," Claire said, tears rising in her eyes. "You almost died on my operating table, Dante!"

"I know," Dante said, bringing her hand up to his lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her knuckles. "I was a fool. I thought protecting you meant staying away. But losing six years of my daughter’s life... losing six years with you... that was not protection. It was torture."

He looked her dead in the eye, his dark brown eyes blazing with absolute conviction.

"I am ending this war, Claire. Not tomorrow. Not next year. Tonight. I am going to tear Petrov’s network apart and hand my legitimate assets over to a legal trust for Mia. I am stepping down permanently."

May you like

"Can you really do that?" Claire asked, her voice filled with hope and fear.

"I have to," Dante said firmly. "Because I refuse to miss another day of her life. And because I never stopped loving you."
