Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

Three days passed. Dante was moved out of the ICU and into a private room on the VIP wing. Claire made it a point to avoid that wing entirely. She threw herself into her work, taking extra double shifts, anything to keep her mind off the man recovering upstairs.
However, the universe seemed intent on frustrating her efforts.
It was Thursday evening, and Claire was sitting in her small office writing up patient charts when the door opened. She looked up, expecting to see one of the nurses. Instead, a tall, older man walked in, wearing an impeccable gray suit and carrying a leather briefcase. His graying hair was slicked back, and his eyes held the cold, calculating look of a lawyer who had won too many unwinnable cases.
"Dr. Callahan," the man said smoothly, closing the door behind him. "My name is Julian Vance. I am Mr. Moretti’s primary legal counsel."
Claire set her pen down slowly. "If this is about his medical bill, you can speak to billing."
"It's not about the bill," Julian said, taking a seat across from her without being asked. "It's about security. Mr. Moretti's situation is... complicated. The men who attempted to end his life on Monday night have not stopped looking for him."
Claire felt a chill run down her spine. "The hospital has security."
"Hospital security carries flashlights and walkie-talkies, Dr. Callahan," Julian said dryly. "The people hunting Dante carry military-grade weaponry and have deep pockets. Dante is refusing to move to a private facility until he knows you are safe."
"Me?" Claire frowned. "I have nothing to do with him. I haven't seen him in six years."
Julian looked at her intently. "You saved his life. In our world, that makes you a target of interest. His rivals—specifically the Petrov syndicate—are trying to determine if you are merely an emergency doctor who happened to be on shift, or if you are something more to Dante Moretti."
Claire's blood ran cold. The thought of gangsters coming after her was horrifying, but then a far worse thought hit her like a physical blow.
Mia.
If they looked into her life, if they dug just a little bit beneath the surface, they would find a six-year-old girl with dark eyes and a stubborn jaw who had been born exactly nine months after Dante vanished.
"I need you to listen to me very carefully," Julian continued, leaning forward. "Dante wants to offer you and your daughter round-the-clock protection."
Claire gasped. "Does he know?"
"Know what?" Julian asked, his eyes narrowing slightly in curiosity.
Claire quickly caught herself, realizing Julian didn't know about Mia's true parentage. He simply assumed "daughter" meant Claire had moved on and had a child with someone else.
"He... he doesn't know anything about my personal life," Claire stammered, trying to regain her composure. "And I don't need his protection. I want nothing to do with him or his enemies."
"Dr. Callahan, this isn't a game," Julian said grimly. "Dante took three bullets to keep his turf in line. The city is on the verge of a gang war. You are already in the splash zone."
Before Claire could answer, her phone rang. It was Kate.
A sudden knot of dread tightened in Claire's stomach. She snatched the phone off her desk. "Kate? What's wrong?"
"Claire, don't panic," Kate's voice came through the speaker, nervous and hushed. "There's a strange car parked down the street from your house. It’s been idling there for an hour. Two men inside. They’ve been looking at the house through binoculars. I’m sitting in the kitchen with Mia, keeping her away from the windows."
Claire’s heart stopped. The room seemed to tilt.
"Kate, lock all the doors," Claire said, her voice shaking violently. "I'm coming home right now."
"Claire, what's happening?" Kate asked, panic rising in her voice.
"Just lock the doors!" Claire hung up, her breathing ragged. She looked up at Julian, who was watching her with a sharp, calculating glare.
"They're at my house," Claire whispered, horror choking her words. "My daughter is at home."
Julian stood up immediately, pulling a satellite phone from his coat pocket. "Stay here. I am calling Dante's security detail. They will be there in five minutes."
"No!" Claire stood up, snatching her coat. "I'm going home!"
"You drive into that, you're dead!" Julian snapped. "Let Dante's men handle it!"
Claire didn't listen. She bolted out of her office, down the corridor, and straight up the stairs toward the VIP ward. She didn't care about rules, security, or hospital protocol anymore. Her baby was in danger.
She burst into Dante’s room. Dante was sitting up in bed, unhooking himself from the heart monitor, his face pale with exertion as he struggled to pull a black shirt over his bandaged chest.
"Claire!" Dante looked up, surprised. "What are you doing—"
"They're at my house, Dante!" Claire screamed, tears streaming down her face, abandoning all pretense. "Your enemies! They're at my house right now! They’re looking at my daughter!"
Dante froze. His eyes widened, dark and intense.
"Your daughter?" Dante whispered, his voice cracking. He looked at her, searching her panicked face, calculating the timeline in a fraction of a second. "Claire... how old is she?"
May you like
Claire swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she sobbed.
"She’s six, Dante," Claire wept, her voice breaking into a desperate plea. "She's six years old. And she has your eyes."
