Chapter 5 - Confrontation at the Doorstep

The black SUV screeched to a halt at the corner of Claire’s quiet residential street. Outside, the night was dark and misty, typical for Seattle autumn. Through the rain-streaked window, Claire could see the modest two-story home she had worked so hard to afford. Parked right across from her driveway was a silver sedan with tinted windows.

Before Claire’s SUV had even fully stopped, two black vans swerved into the street from opposite directions, pinning the silver sedan in place.

Four heavily armed men in tactical gear poured out of the vans, weapons drawn and aimed at the silver sedan.

"Out of the vehicle! Hands where we can see them!" Marcus, Dante's head of security, barked.

The doors of the silver sedan flew open, and two men in leather jackets stepped out, holding handguns. But before they could squeeze a trigger, Dante’s men moved with terrifying, practiced efficiency. With deafening cracks, Marcus fired two precise shots into the legs of the armed men, sending them crumpling to the wet asphalt, disarmed and groaning in pain.

"Clear!" Marcus shouted.

Claire didn't wait for permission. She shoved the SUV door open and sprinted down the driveway toward her front porch.

"Claire, wait!" Dante yelled, dragging himself out of the vehicle, clutching his chest as fresh blood began to seep through his black shirt.

Claire fumbled with her keys, her hands shaking so violently she nearly dropped them, before finally unlocking the front door and throwing it open.

"Kate! Mia!" Claire screamed, stepping into the hallway.

The house was dark, but a moment later, the door to the downstairs bathroom creaked open. Kate peeked out, pale and trembling, holding a heavy metal flashlight like a club. Behind her stood Mia, clutching a stuffed velvet horse to her chest.

"Claire!" Kate gasped, sagging with relief. "Oh thank God!"

"Mommy!"

Mia broke away from Kate and ran across the hallway, throwing her little arms around Claire’s legs. Claire dropped to her knees, pulling her daughter into an iron embrace, burying her face in Mia’s soft, fragrant hair, crying uncontrollably.

"I'm here, baby. I'm here. You're safe," Claire sobbed, kissing Mia's cheeks, her forehead, her hair. "You're completely safe."

Mia pulled back slightly, her big, dark brown eyes looking at her mother with confusion. "Mommy, why are you crying? Who were those noisy men outside?"

Before Claire could answer, heavy footsteps echoed on the wooden porch steps.

Dante stood in the open doorway.

He was breathing heavily, one hand pressed firmly against his bleeding chest, his face pale from exhaustion and blood loss. He looked tall, imposing, and completely out of place in the warm, pastel-colored hallway of Claire’s home.

Kate gasped, recognizing the notorious figure from news reports immediately, and stepped back in alarm.

But Mia didn't step back.

She turned in her mother’s arms, her small body turning to face the tall stranger standing in the doorway.

Dante stopped in his tracks. The ruthless crime lord, a man who had faced down rival syndicates and survived assassin bullets without blinking, froze as if struck by lightning. His eyes dropped down to the little girl standing in front of him.

He saw his own dark, almond-shaped eyes looking right back at him. He saw his own jawline, his own dark, wavy hair.

"Mia..." Dante whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion so powerful it threatened to tear him apart.

Mia stared at him, her tiny brows furrowing in thought. She looked at his face, at his dark eyes, and then down at his hand, which was clutching his chest.

"Mommy," Mia said softly, her voice echoing in the quiet room. "Is that the man from your drawing in the top drawer?"
