Part 8: Facing the Storm in the Hallway

Two weeks later, the weather in Chicago finally turned from bitter winter ice to a crisp, bright spring morning.

I was standing in the kitchen of my own home, packing a small basket of fresh pastries, when my phone rang. It was Michael. His voice didn't sound panicked anymore; it sounded steady, tired, but genuinely relieved.

"Mom? The doctors just took the baby off the primary oxygen monitor. He's breathing on his own. They said we can bring him home in three days."

A wave of immense warmth washed over me. "Oh, Michael... that is wonderful news. How is Claire?"

"She’s smiling, Mom. Really smiling for the first time in a year. And... we took care of the paperwork with the attorney yesterday. Your name is completely cleared."

"I'm glad," I said gently. "I'll be over this afternoon to help set up the nursery. And bring some groceries."

"Thanks, Mom. We love you."

When I arrived at their house later that afternoon, the atmosphere was completely different. The stack of unopened mail on the kitchen counter was gone. The living room was tidy.

Most importantly, Lily was sitting at the kitchen table drawing with bright, vibrant green and yellow crayons—no black storms in sight.

When she saw me walk through the door, she dropped her crayons and ran straight into my arms, burying her face in my jacket.

"Grandma! The baby is coming home! And Mom said we're going to have family dinner every Sunday without any yelling!"

I picked her up, spinning her around slightly as she giggled. "That sounds like the best kind of weather, sweetheart."

Claire walked out of the kitchen holding a cup of tea. She looked tired, but the sharpness in her eyes was gone, replaced by a genuine, humble warmth.

"Margaret," Claire said softly, walking over. "Thank you. For not giving up on us, even when we gave you every reason to."

"Family isn't about being perfect, Claire," I said, offering a gentle smile. "It's about being honest enough to fix what's broken."
