Part 4: Secrets Hiding Behind the Old Tax Boxes

The blue folder.

The words hung in the cold air of the car, echoing louder than the heater fan.

I stared at Lily, my mind racing through every interaction I had with Michael and Claire over the past year. What blue folder? In all the times I had cleaned their kitchen, organized their pantry, and helped Michael manage his household documents, I had never heard of a blue folder.

"Did she say what was inside the blue folder, Lily?" I asked, keeping my voice as calm as possible so I wouldn't frighten her further.

Lily shook her head, her yellow raincoat rustling. "No. Just that it was hidden in the back of the top shelf in Dad’s home office closet, behind the old tax boxes. She said if you ever went looking around the house like you used to, you’d figure out 'what really happened.'"

My heart pounded against my ribs. What really happened?

Was Michael in financial trouble? Had they accumulated massive debts they were hiding from me? Or was there something else—something much darker tied to the sudden arrival of the premature baby?

"Thank you for telling me, sweetheart," I said, kissing the top of her head. "You are a very brave girl. But remember, you don't have to carry these secrets by yourself. That's an adult job."

"Can we go to your house?" Lily asked, her voice small. "I don't want to go home yet. Mom is crying again, and Dad is punching numbers into his calculator."

"We are going straight to my house," I said firmly, putting the car back in drive. "And we are going to make hot chocolate with extra marshmallows."

That evening, after Michael called twice demanding to know why I hadn't answered his text messages about watching Lily, I finally picked up.

"Mom, where are you? Lily isn't home from school yet," Michael’s voice barked through the receiver, laced with panic and frustration.

"She is with me, Michael," I said evenly. "We are having hot chocolate. She needed a break from the tension at your house."

"A break? Mom, Claire is a wreck! The baby’s doctor appointment went okay, but we’re stressed out of our minds. We need help!"

"Michael," I interrupted, my voice carrying a quiet authority that made him stop mid-sentence. "For twenty-five years, I have dropped everything whenever you or Claire snapped your fingers. I worked night shifts, I ruined my sleep schedule, and I absorbed every crisis you threw my way. But I am done being your emotional shock absorber."

Silence stretched across the phone line for several seconds.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Michael asked, his voice dropping an octave, sounding less like an angry man and more like a defensive boy.

"It means you and Claire are parents now. You have a son fighting in the NICU, and you have a daughter who is terrified by the storms in your house. It’s time to face your own problems instead of blaming everyone else."

Before he could respond, I ended the call and slid my phone into my pocket.

Little did I know, Michael’s reaction to that phone call would set off a chain of events that would bring the hidden secrets crashing down into the light.
