Part 10: Where Everything Belongs

A week later, the baby—little Leo—finally came home.

The house was filled with the soft, sweet scent of baby lotion, clean cotton blankets, and warm sunlight streaming through the living room windows. There were no hidden folders, no secret storms, and no walls built out of fear.

Michael stood by the crib, carefully rocking his son, while Claire sat nearby, looking at her husband and baby with a peaceful expression on her face.

Lily sat on the blue plastic armchair in the corner of the room—the very same chair she had once placed a folded paper towel under to protect me from her mother's judgment.

Only this time, there was no paper towel.

Instead, Lily had draped my handmade blue-and-green knitted baby hat over the back of the chair like a badge of honor.

She looked up at me, smiling proudly with her little missing-tooth grin.

"Look, Grandma," Lily whispered loudly. "The baby is finally here. And the weather outside is completely green and sunny."

I walked over, resting my hand gently on the back of the chair, right beside the little knitted hat. I looked around the room—at my son, at Claire, at my new grandson resting peacefully in his crib, and at the brave little girl who had helped bring the truth into the light.

I didn't smell like industrial nursing home detergent today. I smelled like home. And for the first time in a very long time, everything was exactly where it belonged.
