Chapter 9 - The New Horizon

A year had passed since the hospital room confrontation that had altered the course of Emily’s life forever.
The triplet boys—Ethan, Liam, and Noah—were now walking, wobbling across the plush Persian rugs of the penthouse living room with gleeful shouts and endless energy.
Emily sat on a white velvet sofa, watching her sons chase after a golden retriever puppy that William and Eleanor had gifted them for their first birthday. The penthouse was filled with the sound of pure, innocent laughter—a sharp contrast to the cold, sterile silence of the hospital room a year ago.
Her phone buzzed gently on the glass coffee table.
She glanced down at the screen. It was an encrypted notification from Marcus Vance at Harrington Global legal counsel.
Report: Nathan Brooks's formal petition for early parole was denied by the state board this morning. His minimum sentence will be served in full.
Emily read the notification once, locked the screen, and placed the phone back down without the slightest flicker of emotion. Nathan Brooks was no longer a part of her reality. He was merely a distant chapter in a book she had already finished reading.
The front door opened, and William walked in carrying a stack of architectural blueprints under his arm.
"Emily, my dear," William called out, shedding his overcoat. "I brought the final site blueprints for the new Harrington Global Innovation Hub in downtown Brooklyn. The board voted unanimously to appoint you as the lead managing director of the entire philanthropic and educational division."
Emily smiled, setting down her coffee cup as Ethan wobbled over to her knee, looking up with big brown eyes and giggling. She scooped him up onto her lap, kissing the top of his soft brown curls.
"Lead managing director?" Emily raised an eyebrow, looking at her father with amusement. "Dad, I already have three full-time directors right here in the living room."
William laughed heartily, walking over to ruffle Liam's hair as the toddler crawled past his shoes. "True, but I know my daughter. A Harrington never stays idle for long. You rebuilt your life from the ground up, protected your children, and brought a multi-billion-dollar empire's full weight to bear against dishonesty and greed. Managing a philanthropic division will be a walk in the park."
Emily looked around the sunlit room.
Her sons were laughing, her parents were smiling proudly beside her, and the city skyline outside stretched endlessly toward a bright, cloudless sky.
