Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

Two weeks had passed since the dramatic collapse of Brooks & Sterling LLP. The legal proceedings were moving with terrifying speed, orchestrated by Marcus Vance and backed by the immense political and financial leverage of Harrington Global.

Nathan Brooks sat in a small, sterile conference room on the tenth floor of a downtown Manhattan courthouse building. Gone were the bespoke navy suits, the luxury watches, and the arrogant, triumphant smirk. He wore a rumpled off-the-rack gray suit that hung loosely on his frame, his hair unstyled, dark circles etched deep beneath his bloodshot eyes.

The door opened, and his court-appointed defense attorney—a tired-looking man named Henderson—walked in, tossing a thick stack of settlement proposals onto the laminate table.

"It's over, Nathan," Henderson said bluntly, taking a seat across from him. "The district office formally indicted you this morning on three counts of felony forgery, perjury, and conspiracy to commit mortgage fraud. Harrington Global's legal team submitted the forensic handwriting analysis alongside digital server logs from your firm."

Nathan gripped his hair with both hands, staring down at the table. "Can't we plead down? Community service? Probation? I'm an officer of the court!"

"You were an officer of the court," Henderson corrected harshly. "The bar association officially disbarred you yesterday morning. There is no plea deal on the table. In fact, Harrington Global's general counsel just transmitted a final civil settlement offer through the prosecutor's office."

Nathan looked up, hope flashing briefly in his hollow eyes. "A settlement? What are the terms?"

Henderson slid a single sheet of paper across the table.

"First: You sign an immediate, uncontested divorce decree, granting Emily full, sole legal and physical custody of the triplets, with zero visitation rights until the boys reach majority age, and only at their discretion."

Nathan gasped. "Zero visitation? They're my sons!"

"They are Harrington heirs," Henderson shot back without sympathy. "Second: You surrender every remaining cent of personal property, investments, and vehicles to satisfy the civil damages for defamation and emotional distress. Third: You issue a public, written confession detailing every aspect of the forgery and your conspiracy with Vanessa Reed, to be published in the New York Law Journal."

Nathan stared at the paper as if it were a death warrant. "If I sign this... what happens to the criminal charges?"

"If you sign this, cooperate fully with the federal investigators regarding the firm's financial irregularities, and plead guilty to the lesser administrative counts, the district attorney has agreed to recommend a sentence of eighteen months in a minimum-security facility rather than a maximum federal penitentiary term," Henderson explained quietly. "If you refuse... William Harrington will ensure you spend the next fifteen years of your life in maximum security."

The reality of his situation crashed down on Nathan with suffocating weight.

He had thought he was the master of his universe. He had walked into a hospital room holding divorce papers, smiling beside a mistress, looking down on a woman who had just brought his children into the world.

Now, he was completely destitute, stripped of his license, abandoned by his mistress, facing prison time, and permanently erased from the lives of his own sons.

With shaking fingers, Nathan picked up a cheap plastic pen, pressed it against the paper, and signed his name.
