Chapter 6 - Into the Labyrinth

The sound of distant, heavy thuds began to echo through the subterranean walls—the unmistakable sound of tactical breaching charges detonating at the upper blast doors.
Dr. Vance’s composure shattered. He turned to the two paramedics. "Clear the inventory! Take the infants through the service tunnel now!"
One of the paramedics lunged forward to grab Lily from Natalie’s arms.
Instinct and maternal fury took over. Natalie didn't hesitate. She swung heavy metal IV pole resting next to the bassinet with all her remaining strength, striking the paramedic squarely across the chest. He stumbled backward, crashing into a rack of glass medicine vials that shattered across the floor.
"Run, Natalie!" Claire shouted through the speaker.
Natalie sprinted past the disoriented doctor, clutching Lily tightly against her chest. She burst out of the nursery into the central hallway just as emergency red alarm lights began flashing along the ceiling. Siren klaxons blared, drowning out the ambient hum of the facility.
"Where do I go?!" Natalie yelled over the noise, her heart pounding in her ears as severe contractions tore through her abdomen once again. She collapsed against the corridor wall, struggling to keep her feet beneath her.
"Left! Take the left corridor toward the ventilation sector!" Claire instructed frantically, scanning the structural schematics on her dispatch screens. "The SWAT team is coming down the main eastern elevator shaft, but the syndicate's security forces are locking down the sub-basement blast doors to buy time to escape!"
Natalie stumbled down the left hallway. The lighting was dimly lit by red emergency lamps, casting long, twisting shadows along the concrete walls. Behind her, she heard shouting and fast-approaching footsteps—Dr. Vance and his remaining guards were pursuing her.
"They're behind me!" Natalie gasped, cradling Lily’s head against her neck. The baby gave a soft, high-pitched cry. "Claire, I can't run much further... the pain..."
"You don't have to run much further," Claire said softly, her voice filled with fierce encouragement. "Look ahead. Do you see a heavy red door marked VENTILATION SHAFT B?"
"Yes!"

"Inside that room is the main manual override for the subterranean emergency system," Claire explained rapidly. "If you drop the fire doors from inside, it will seal the entire corridor behind you and block Vance from reaching you!"
Natalie pushed through the heavy red door and slammed it shut. Beside the frame was a large yellow lever under glass. Without hesitation, she smashed the safety cover with her elbow and pulled the lever down with all her weight.
