Chapter 3 - The Ghost Protocol

Natalie pressed her back against the cold steel of the linen cart, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The footsteps of the paramedic and the surgical nurse faded down the hallway, leaving only the steady, rhythmic hum of the facility’s ventilation system.
"Claire..." Natalie whispered, her voice trembling violently. "Did you hear that?"
"I heard," Claire responded instantly, her voice tight with suppressed anger. "Natalie, listen to me. I just dispatched a tactical SWAT team to your location. They are treating this as an active kidnapping and high-level medical syndicate operation. But you need to stay hidden."
"They're taking the babies," Natalie choked back a tear, clutching her lower belly as another sharp wave of labor pains hit her. "They're inducing mothers, stealing their newborns, and leaving the mothers to die so there are no witnesses. They've printed a death certificate band for me already..."
"You are not going to die tonight, Natalie," Claire said fiercely. "I am going to guide you out of there. Look at your phone—can you see a room number or marker nearby?"
Natalie carefully peeked around the side of the cart. Adjacent to the alcove was a brushed-steel door marked with a backlit digital display: RECOVERY BAY 04.
"I'm outside Recovery Bay 04," Natalie whispered.
"Okay," Claire said, the sound of rapid keyboard clicking echoing in the background. "I have the floor plans pulled up. The sub-basement annex was originally designed with a private service elevator used to transport sensitive medical materials directly to an underground loading bay on the west side of the property. That’s how they’re moving the babies out without anyone seeing them on Mercy Avenue."
"Where is the nursery?" Natalie demanded, taking a heavy, deliberate step out from behind the cart. "I heard a baby cry upstairs, Claire. My baby... or someone else's. I'm not leaving without Lily."
"Natalie, your life is in immediate danger!" Claire pleaded softly. "If you go further into that wing, they will catch you."
"If I leave this building without my baby, I won't survive anyway," Natalie said with absolute conviction. "Tell me where the neonatal holding area is."
There was a pause on the line. Claire let out a long, shuddering breath. "The secondary surgical suite and neonatal incubator room are at the end of the east corridor, past the central monitoring station. But it's guarded. The blueprints show a secure airlock entry."
"My wristband," Natalie remembered, holding up the plastic band on her left arm. "It unlocked the stairwell door. It has an RFID chip inside."

"Then it's your keycard," Claire realized. "They used it to move you through the facility while you were unconscious. Be fast, Natalie. The police units outside are breaking through the chained perimeter fences right now, but the syndicate is panicking. When criminals panic, they get dangerous."
Natalie drew in a sharp breath, straightened her spine against the burning sensation in her abdomen, and moved quietly down the illuminated corridor toward the heart of the shadow facility.
