Chapter 4 - Echoes of the Lost

Every step down the corridor felt like navigating a surreal nightmare. The air was sterile and cold, smelling of fresh paint and surgical soap, masking the decay of the abandoned building above. High-grade security cameras swung slowly on ceiling mounts, their small red lenses tracking back and forth. Natalie slipped from shadow to shadow, ducking beneath the camera sweeps whenever possible.

Another wave of contractions struck, harder this time. She sagged against a smooth glass wall, gasping silently.

"Natalie? Stay with me," Claire’s voice came through the earpiece. "I'm monitoring the police band. The first officer on scene just found a concealed ramp buried under overgrown weeds near the old emergency entrance. It leads down into the subterranean network."

"They... they need to hurry," Natalie gasped, sweat dripping down her forehead. "The contractions are coming every three minutes now. Whatever they injected into my IV... it's speeding up labor."

"Focus on your breathing," Claire coached smoothly. "In for four seconds, hold, out for four. You are strong, Natalie. You are going to bring Lily into this world, and you are both going to walk out into the daylight."

Natalie wiped her brow and pushed forward. Up ahead, double glass doors opened into a large, glass-walled room flooded with warm yellow light.

Inside were six state-of-the-art medical bassinets.

In two of them, tiny white blankets were moving.

Natalie’s breath caught in her throat. She crept up to the glass wall. One baby was sleeping peacefully under a warming lamp; the other was squirming, making small, frantic sniffing sounds—the same sound Natalie had heard through the ceiling vent earlier.

She pressed her hand against the glass. Above the second bassinet, a digital monitor displayed medical statistics and a temporary ID label: BABY REED - FEMALE.

"Lily..." Natalie sobbed quietly.

She scanned her wristband against the electronic door sensor. The lock chimed softly, glowing green, and the glass doors slid open with a whisper.

Natalie rushed into the room, tears streaming down her cheeks. She reached into the clear bassinet and gently lifted the tiny, blanket-wrapped bundle into her arms. The baby girl had a full head of soft dark hair and tiny fingers that immediately curled around Natalie’s pinky finger.

"I found her," Natalie whispered into the phone, clutching her baby close against her chest. "Claire, I have Lily. She's alive. She's healthy."

"Oh, thank God," Claire gasped, her voice cracking with emotion. "Natalie, pull her close and get out of that room right now! The SWAT team is descending the main subterranean corridor, but the syndicate members are clearing out!"

Before Natalie could turn toward the exit, a sharp voice shattered the silence.

"You really should have stayed in bed, Mrs. Reed."
