Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Romanos

With the Romano family completely dismantled and the internal traitors eliminated, a profound, heavy silence fell over Chicago. The blizzard began to clear by morning, leaving behind a pristine, untouched blanket of white gold across the city.
Luca returned to the estate just as the sun began to peek through the snow-laden pines of Lake Forest. He walked into the master bedroom, exhausted but lighter than he had ever felt.
Elena was awake, sitting by the roaring fireplace, watching Mia and Cara sleep soundly on a pile of oversized pillows on the floor.
When she saw Luca enter, undamaged and whole, she stood up and threw herself into his arms. Luca buried his face in her hair, inhaling her sweet, familiar scent of vanilla and rain.
"It's over, Elena," Luca whispered into her ear. "The Romanos are gone. Matteo is gone. No one is ever going to hunt you again. You don't have to live in the shadows."
Elena looked up at him, tears of relief streaming down her cheeks. "Can we really have a life, Luca? Can you be a father and a husband without the blood following you home?"
Luca walked over to the desk and picked up his mother’s alexandrite ring. He took Elena’s left hand, rubbing his thumb over her bare ring finger.
"I am going to restructure the entire Ravenna syndicate," Luca declared with absolute certainty. "We are moving entirely into legitimate international shipping, real estate, and philanthropy. I am tearing down the underworld my father built, brick by brick, to build a fortress of safety for our daughters. I want them to grow up proud of their name."
He slid his mother's antique platinum ring onto Elena's finger. It fit perfectly.
"Five years ago, they stole our beginning," Luca said, his gray eyes shining with an emotion he had hidden away for far too long. "But they cannot touch our forever. Will you marry me, Elena?"
Elena smiled through her tears, nodding rapidly. "Yes, Luca. A thousand times, yes."
From the floor, a small voice whispered, "Does this mean we get to stay in the castle forever?"
Luca and Elena turned to see Mia and Cara sitting up, rubbing their sleepy eyes, bright smiles breaking across their identical, beautiful faces.

Luca laughed—a warm, booming sound that echoed through the massive room. He walked over, scooping both girls into his arms, and brought them over to join Elena by the fire.
"Yes, my sweet girls," Luca said, kissing their cheeks. "We are staying here forever."
