Chapter 5 - A Shadow on Michigan Avenue

The assault on the Union Stock Yards meatpacking plant was swift, brutal, and silent.

Under the cover of the blinding snow, Luca's tactical teams cut the power grids to the facility. Armed with night-vision optics and silenced rifles, they swept through the frozen corridors like ghosts. The smell of copper and old iron hung heavy in the air.

Luca walked through the facility, his boots stepping over the fallen bodies of Romano mercenaries. He didn't blink. He didn't hesitate. Every step brought him closer to the woman he had spent five years grieving.

He kicked open the heavy steel door of the central office.

Inside, Silvio Romano was waiting, holding a bleeding, bruised Elena by her hair, a silver revolver pressed against her temple.

Elena looked up. Her clothes were torn, and her face was marred by cuts, but her eyes—the beautiful, warm hazel eyes Luca remembered—widened in shock.

"Luca..." she breathed, her voice cracking. "The girls..."

"They're safe, Elena," Luca said, his voice steady, his eyes locked on Silvio. "They are at the estate. They're warm. They're waiting for you."

Silvio laughed, a harsh, grating sound that echoed off the metallic walls. "Safe? For now, Ravenna. But you step any closer, and her brains are decorating this wall. Drop your weapon!"

Luca didn't drop his gun. Instead, he smiled—a terrifying, hollow expression. "Silvio, you think you're holding a hostage. But you're actually just standing in a grave."

"I'll kill her!" Silvio shrieked, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Thwack.

A single high-velocity round from Marco's sniper rifle shattered the glass window behind Silvio, tearing clean through his right shoulder. The revolver flew from his hand as he screamed in agony, collapsing to the floor.

Before Silvio could even hit the ground, Luca was across the room. He gathered Elena into his arms, pulling her tightly against his chest. She burst into tears, wrapping her arms around his neck, burying her face in his cashmere coat.

"I've got you," Luca whispered, his voice trembling with a rare, raw emotion. "I've got you, dangerous girl. I'm never letting you go again."

He handed Elena to Marco. "Take her to the car. Keep her warm. Give me five minutes with Silvio."

"Luca, no," Elena whispered, clutching his hand. "Don't let them make you a monster anymore."

Luca kissed her forehead gently. "I'm not being a monster for them, Elena. I'm being a father."
