Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Awakening

Three weeks passed. Rebecca moved back into her childhood home—a gated estate nestled in the rolling hills outside the city.

The physical scars were healing. The dental surgeon had placed an implant, and her face was no longer bruised. But the psychological war had just begun.

Every morning, Rebecca woke up with a knot in her stomach. Trevor’s legal team was relentless. They had subpoenaed her medical records from a decade ago, leaking subtle rumors to tabloid magazines about her “fragile state” and claiming that Arthur Sterling was using his billions to strip a loving father of his parental rights.

One afternoon, while sitting in the nursery watching Emma play with wooden blocks, Rebecca felt a sharp kick inside her stomach. She placed her hand over her abdomen, feeling the strong, rhythmic heartbeat of her unborn baby girl.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was a text message from an unknown number.

“You think your dad can protect you forever? Once the press finds out what kind of mother you really are, you’ll lose Emma and the new baby too. Sign the joint-custody agreement and drop the charges, or I’ll destroy you.”

Rebecca stared at the screen. Trevor.

Six months ago, a message like this would have sent her into a panic attack. She would have cried, doubted herself, and begged him to stop.

But as she looked at Emma, laughing as she stacked a yellow block on top of a red one, something shifted deep inside Rebecca’s soul. The lingering fear evaporated, replaced by a sudden, icy clarity.

He was threatening her because he was terrified. He was using terror because he had nothing else left.

She didn't reply to the message. Instead, she took a screenshot, forwarded it immediately to Eleanor Vance and her father, and then walked down the grand staircase into Arthur’s study.

Arthur was at his desk, surrounded by legal files, looking older and more tired than she had ever seen him.

“Dad,” Rebecca said, her voice quiet but ringing with a firmness that made Arthur look up immediately.

“Becca? Is everything okay? Are you having contractions?”

“I’m fine,” she said, walking over to stand opposite his desk. “I want to testify.”

Arthur frowned. “Sweetheart, Eleanor said you don't have to take the stand. The depositions and medical records are enough. Testifying will subject you to Drake’s brutal cross-examination. He will try to tear you apart.”

“Let him,” Rebecca said, leaning forward. “Trevor spent three years making me believe I was weak. He made me believe I deserved every insult, every scream, and every hit. If I stay silent now, I am teaching Emma and her sister that women should hide when men get violent.”

She looked her billionaire father straight in the eyes. “You tried to protect me with money, Dad. And I love you for it. But this time, I need to protect my daughters with my own voice.”

Arthur stared at his daughter. For the first time in weeks, the weary sorrow in his face dissolved, replaced by overwhelming respect.

“All right,” Arthur said softly, reaching across the desk to squeeze her hand. “Then we give them a fight they will never forget.”
