Chapter 4 - The Billionaire’s Intervention

By dawn, Arthur Sterling had converted his personal office suite into a war room.

Four top-tier attorneys from the city’s premier family law firm sat around a marble conference table, alongside a private investigator and a public relations specialist. Rebecca sat at the head of the table next to her father, a warm cup of tea in her hands.

“Here is where we stand,” said Eleanor Vance, the lead attorney, laying out a series of documents. “Trevor Vance—no relation to your doctor—is a mid-level financial analyst at Vanguard Investments. He has no significant personal assets. The house you were living in was purchased with a down payment provided by Mr. Sterling, though Trevor’s name is on the title.”

“I don't care about the house,” Rebecca said softly. “I just want my daughters to be safe. I want full custody.”

“It won't be that simple,” Eleanor warned gently. “Trevor has already hired a high-profile criminal defense attorney. At 6:00 AM today, his lawyer filed a police report claiming you attacked him, that he acted in self-defense, and that you are an unstable mother suffering from severe prenatal depression.”

Rebecca gasped, her face going pale. “What? That’s a lie! He struck me!”

“We know,” Eleanor replied calmly. “Standard abuser legal strategy: accuse the victim, create confusion, and try to force a quiet settlement out of court to avoid public scandal.”

Arthur slammed his fist onto the marble table, making the coffee cups rattle. “There will be no quiet settlement. He broke my daughter’s jaw, knocked her tooth out, and terrorized my granddaughter. I want him in prison.”

“If we go to war, Arthur, it will get dirty,” Eleanor said, looking directly at Rebecca. “Trevor’s defense team will dig into your past. They will portray your father’s wealth as a tool used to bully a working-class husband. They will drag this through the press if we let them.”

Rebecca looked at her father, then at the photo of Emma sleeping safely in the adjoining bedroom. A sudden, cold clarity washed over her. For months, she had been walking on eggshells, shrinking herself to keep the peace. But looking at the brutal reality of what Trevor was willing to do to destroy her, something inside her snapped.

The fear didn't disappear, but it was overridden by a fierce, maternal instinct.

“Let them try,” Rebecca said, her voice steady and resolute. “I am done hiding. I am done being afraid.”

Arthur looked at his daughter, a grim sense of pride flashing in his eyes. He turned to his head of security. “Activate the investigation team. Dig into Trevor’s past. Every job he lost, every ex-girlfriend, every bar fight. I want every skeleton in his closet dragged into the light.”

“And what about his job at Vanguard?” the PR specialist asked.

Arthur’s eyes turned cold as ice. “Vanguard’s primary investor is Sterling Global Holdings. By noon today, Trevor Vance will not only be unemployed—he will be unhireable.”
