Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Legacy

The private medical clinic on the top floor of the Sterling Tower was silent save for the hum of medical monitors.

It was 2:00 AM. Rebecca sat on an examination table wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket. The dentist had already administered local anesthesia, cleaned the deep lacerations in her gums, and fitted her with a temporary dental prosthetic. The doctor had spent an hour performing ultrasound scans on her unborn baby girl.

“The baby’s heart rate is stable, Rebecca,” Dr. Vance said gently, turning the monitor so she could see the tiny, fluttering image on the screen. “She’s resilient. But your stress levels are dangerously high. You need total rest.”

Rebecca let out a shaky breath, placing a hand on her round stomach. Beside the bed, Emma was fast asleep in a plush crib that Arthur’s staff had rushed in hours ago.

Arthur stood by the large floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city skyline, a glass of scotch untouched in his hand. Once the doctor stepped out, he walked over and pulled up a chair beside her.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Becca?” Arthur asked quietly. The usual sternness in his voice was gone, replaced by a deep sorrow. “For two years… you cut me off. You stopped coming to family dinners. You turned down every offer of help.”

Rebecca looked down at her hands. The physical pain in her mouth was numb now, but the psychological ache was unbearable.

“He told me you were trying to control my life,” Rebecca whispered, her slurred speech making her feel fragile. “He said… he said you looked down on him because he wasn't rich. He convinced me that if I really loved him, I had to choose between my family and my marriage.”

“Classic isolation,” Arthur muttered bitterly. “He cut you off from the people who could protect you.”

“It didn’t start with hitting,” Rebecca admitted, tears filling her eyes. “It was little things at first. Criticizing what I wore. Controlling our bank accounts. Blaming me every time he had a bad day at work. Then he began shouting. And then tonight… tonight Emma wouldn't stop crying, and I tried to defend her…”

She broke down, sobbing into her hands. Arthur immediately pulled her into a firm embrace, holding her close as she wept.

“It’s my fault,” Arthur murmured into her hair.

Rebecca pulled back, confused. “What do you mean?”

Arthur looked out the window, his expression heavy with memories he had tried for decades to bury.

“Trevor didn’t invent this violence, Rebecca,” Arthur said solemnly. “And sadly, neither did he act alone in a vacuum. My own father—your grandfather—was an abusive man. I grew up in a house where doors were kicked off hinges and silence was maintained through terror. When I made my fortune, I swore I would build a wall of money so thick that no one could ever hurt my family again.”

He looked at Rebecca with tears glistening in his own eyes. “I was so focused on building that financial wall that I didn't teach you how to spot a monster behind a handsome face. I raised you to be gentle, but I forgot to teach you how to fight. I failed you.”

“No, Dad,” Rebecca said, clutching his hand tightly. “You came tonight. You saved us.”

“I got us out of the building,” Arthur corrected, his voice hardening into steel. “Now, we fight him in the open.”
