PART 8 — The Trap They Never Saw Coming

Patrick listened to the recording three times.
Then a fourth.
Each replay made the room feel colder.
Richard Sloan's voice was unmistakable.
"Tomorrow... Arthur Bennett won't be a problem anymore."
Patrick immediately called Logan.
"Don't let Arthur leave the house."
Logan was already on his feet.
"What happened?"
"We don't have much time."
"I'll explain when I get there."
Less than twenty minutes later...
Patrick arrived at Logan's home with two former federal investigators who now worked as Carter Innovation's security consultants.
They listened to the recording in silence.
When it ended, one of them spoke first.
"This isn't just intimidation."
"It's a threat."
The other nodded.
"And if Richard has done this before, he won't make the mistake of saying it twice."
Logan looked toward the living room.
Arthur was helping Ellie finish a puzzle.
He laughed as she proudly snapped the final piece into place.
After nine stolen years...
He had finally found his family.
Logan wasn't going to let anyone take that away again.
That night, security around the house doubled.
Additional cameras.
Licensed guards.
Every entrance monitored.
Arthur apologized repeatedly.
"I'm bringing danger into your home."
Logan shook his head.
"No."
"They brought danger."
"You brought the truth."
Grace reached across the table and squeezed her father's hand.
"For the first time since I was twenty-two..."
"I know where you are."
"I'm not losing you again."
Arthur couldn't answer.
He simply nodded through tears.
The following morning...
The family prepared to leave for court.
One vehicle carried Logan, Grace, and Ellie.
A second SUV carried Arthur and two security officers.
Patrick drove behind them.
Halfway to the courthouse...
Patrick noticed a black sedan following Arthur's vehicle.
It stayed three cars back.
Every turn.
Every lane change.
Always there.
Patrick spoke calmly into his radio.
"Vehicle behind Arthur."
"Black sedan."
"Maintain observation."
The security team immediately altered the route.
The sedan followed.
There was no longer any doubt.
At the next intersection...
The black sedan suddenly accelerated.
It crossed two lanes.
Ignoring a red light.
Straight toward Arthur's SUV.
"Watch out!"
The driver reacted instantly.
He swerved hard.
The black sedan slammed into the concrete barrier instead.
Metal screamed.
Glass exploded across the roadway.
Arthur's SUV spun once...
But remained upright.
Patrick was already out of his car before the vehicles stopped moving.
The driver of the black sedan tried to run.
He made it less than twenty feet.
Security officers tackled him to the pavement.
Inside the wrecked sedan...
Police found three license plates.
A fake driver's license.
A loaded handgun.
And an envelope.
On the front...
One handwritten word.
Arthur.
News of the attempted attack spread before noon.
Every television station interrupted regular programming.
Reporters who had once questioned Grace now stood outside the courthouse asking a different question.
"Who wanted Arthur Bennett silenced?"
Public sympathy shifted dramatically.
Richard Sloan watched the breaking news from his office.
His jaw tightened.
One failed plan.
Too many witnesses.
His assistant entered quietly.
"The board is asking questions."
Richard didn't look up.
"Tell them I'm unavailable."
"They're threatening an emergency meeting."
Richard finally stood.
"They don't threaten me."
But for the first time in years...
His confidence had begun to crack.
The court session resumed under heavy security.
The judge addressed the courtroom before testimony began.
"In light of today's events..."
"This court has ordered immediate protective measures for all witnesses."
He looked directly toward Arthur.
"No witness in this proceeding will be intimidated."
Victoria lowered her eyes.
She said nothing.
Then the prosecution introduced the newest evidence.
The hidden recording from Richard's penthouse.
The courtroom became silent as the audio played.
Victoria's voice.
Richard's reply.
Then the sentence everyone had heard on the news.
"Tomorrow... Arthur Bennett won't be a problem anymore."
When the recording ended...
Richard's attorney stood immediately.
"Objection."
"The recording was obtained without consent."
The judge remained calm.
"The admissibility of the recording will be determined separately."
"But the court will consider it for purposes of witness protection."
Richard's expression darkened.
For the first time...
He looked genuinely afraid.
The afternoon brought another surprise.
Patrick took the witness stand.
He wasn't there as Logan's assistant.
He was there as a witness.
He calmly explained how he had begun investigating after Victoria appeared.
He presented financial timelines.
Corporate filings.
Property transfers.
Hidden ownership documents.
Every trail led back to one conclusion.
Richard Sloan hadn't merely helped Victoria.
He had financed the lawsuit.
Paid her attorneys.
Covered her personal debts.
In exchange...
He expected leverage over Logan Carter.
The attorney asked Patrick,
"Why would Mr. Sloan go to such lengths?"
Patrick answered without hesitation.
"Because he failed to buy Carter Innovation."
"And he believed destroying Mr. Carter's family would force him to negotiate."
The courtroom erupted into whispers.
The strategy was finally visible.
Ellie had never been the objective.
She had been the weapon.
Grace closed her eyes.
The realization hurt more than she expected.
A little girl who loved coloring books...
Bedtime stories...
And pancakes...
Had become a bargaining chip in someone else's greed.
Logan reached for her hand.
"We're ending this."
She nodded.
"Together."
Late that afternoon...
A court officer hurried into the courtroom carrying a sealed envelope.
He handed it directly to the judge.
The judge read the first page.
Then another.
His expression changed.
He looked toward Richard Sloan.
"Mr. Sloan..."
"I have just been informed that federal investigators have executed search warrants at your offices."
Richard's face lost all color.
The judge continued.
"Multiple boxes of financial records have been seized."
"And according to this notice..."
"...one of your senior executives has agreed to cooperate with investigators."
Richard slowly turned toward his legal team.
None of them met his eyes.
He finally understood.
Someone inside his own company...
Had betrayed him.
As court adjourned for the day...
Richard whispered to Victoria,
"We're running out of time."
Victoria whispered back,
May you like
"No..."
"We already have."
