PART 6 — The Tape She Never Knew Existed

The image shook violently.

Whoever had held the old camcorder had trembling hands.

The date appeared in the corner of the screen.

Nine years earlier.

Patrick instinctively reached for the remote.

Logan stopped him.

"No."

"We watch all of it."

The room fell silent.

Only the crackling sound of the aging videotape filled the storage unit.

Victoria stood in the middle of the living room.

Perfectly dressed.

Perfectly composed.

Except for the rage in her eyes.

Across from her stood Grace.

Twenty-two years old.

Seven months pregnant.

Terrified.

"I'm your daughter," Grace pleaded.

"I'm asking for help."

Victoria folded her arms.

"You stopped being my daughter the moment you embarrassed this family."

"I fell in love."

"You were irresponsible."

"I'm carrying your grandchild."

"I don't have a grandchild."

Grace's shoulders shook.

"Dad..."

The camera turned.

A middle-aged man stepped into view.

Grace's father.

His eyes were red from crying.

"Victoria..."

"Please."

"She's our little girl."

Victoria didn't even look at him.

"Choose."

"H-her..."

"...or me."

The man stood frozen.

Grace waited.

Seconds felt like hours.

Finally...

He lowered his head.

Grace closed her eyes.

She already understood.

Without another word, she picked up her suitcase.

She walked toward the door.

Then...

Something unexpected happened.

As Grace reached the porch...

Her father quietly slipped something into the side pocket of her bag.

He whispered so softly the microphone barely caught it.

"I'm sorry."

"I love you."

"I'll find you."

Victoria turned.

"What did you say?"

He forced a smile.

"Goodbye."

The door slammed.

The tape continued.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

Victoria paced through the house furiously.

"She'll come crawling back."

"She has nowhere to go."

Grace's father didn't answer.

He simply stared at the closed front door.

Then...

When Victoria left the room...

He collapsed into a chair and cried.

Not quiet tears.

Not polite tears.

The kind that come from a broken heart.

Patrick swallowed hard.

"He loved her."

Logan nodded.

"But he wasn't brave enough."

The tape ended.

Static returned.

Neither man moved.

Finally Patrick asked,

"What did he put in her bag?"

Logan remembered.

Grace had once mentioned finding an envelope after arriving at a shelter.

Inside had been just under two thousand dollars.

Enough to survive for a few weeks.

She never knew where it came from.

Now she did.

Her father had tried to save her...

In the only way he could.

They carried every box back to Carter Innovation.

By morning...

Digital forensic experts had begun preserving every tape.

Every photograph.

Every document.

Nothing would be left to chance.

Grace arrived shortly after nine.

Logan didn't tell her anything.

He simply took her hand.

"I need to show you something."

She noticed the old television immediately.

"What is this?"

"A piece of your past."

Patrick quietly left the room.

Giving them privacy.

Logan pressed Play.

Grace watched.

For the first minute...

She couldn't breathe.

By the second...

Her hands began shaking.

By the third...

Tears streamed uncontrollably down her face.

When she heard her father's whispered words—

"I'm sorry."

She covered her mouth.

"No..."

"He tried..."

"He really tried..."

The years of anger she'd carried suddenly became something far more complicated.

Her father had failed her.

But he had also loved her.

Both things could be true.

When the tape ended...

Grace didn't speak.

She simply leaned against Logan.

"I spent nine years believing..."

"...he chose her."

Logan gently brushed away her tears.

"He did."

"But he regretted it every day after."

Grace nodded slowly.

"I think..."

"I can forgive him."

Not because what he did was right.

But because hate had become too heavy to carry.

That afternoon...

Their attorney nearly smiled for the first time in weeks.

"This changes everything."

"The tape?"

"The tape."

"And the letters."

"And the financial records."

"And the recording from the restaurant."

He carefully organized every piece of evidence.

"For the first time..."

"We're not relying on memories."

"We have proof."

Across town...

Victoria sat confidently inside her lawyer's office.

"Tomorrow's hearing will go well."

Her attorney frowned.

"I wouldn't celebrate yet."

"What changed?"

"A motion was filed this morning."

"What motion?"

"They've introduced newly discovered evidence."

Victoria shrugged.

"It won't matter."

Her lawyer looked unusually nervous.

"They're asking the judge to review it privately before testimony resumes."

Victoria's confidence faded slightly.

"What evidence?"

"I don't know."

For the first time...

She looked worried.

That evening...

Ellie noticed everyone whispering.

She tugged on Logan's sleeve.

"Daddy?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are you scared?"

He smiled honestly.

"A little."

She reached into her backpack.

"I made something."

It was another drawing.

Three people holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.

Above them she'd written in careful handwriting:

Families stay together.

Logan stared at it for several seconds.

Then hugged her tightly.

"I needed this today."

The next morning...

The courtroom filled before sunrise.

Journalists sensed something important was about to happen.

Even Victoria noticed the atmosphere had changed.

People weren't watching Grace anymore.

They were watching her.

The judge entered.

"Before testimony resumes..."

"I have reviewed the newly submitted evidence."

He removed his glasses.

His expression was unreadable.

"Counsel..."

"You may proceed."

Logan's attorney stood.

"Your Honor..."

"The respondents call their first witness."

Everyone expected Grace.

Or Logan.

Instead...

An elderly man slowly walked into the courtroom using a wooden cane.

Victoria's face turned completely white.

"No..."

She whispered it before anyone spoke his name.

The courtroom clerk announced,

"State your name for the record."

The old man lifted his chin.

His voice was weak...

But clear.

"My name..."

"...is Arthur Bennett."

Grace gasped.

The courtroom erupted.

She had attended his funeral.

Nine years earlier.

She had stood beside an empty coffin.

Cried over a grave.

Believed her father was dead.

Now...

He was standing only twenty feet away.

Looking directly at her.

With tears already running down his face.

"Hello..."

"...Princess."

May you like

The nickname only one person had ever called her.

Grace collapsed into sobs.
