Part 2: The Truth Hidden in Her Mother's Diary

Part 2: The Truth Hidden in Her Mother's Diary
Logan stared at Ellie, but for several seconds, no words came.
Why do you make my mom cry?
It was such a small question.
Yet it carried five years of silence.
Before he could answer, one of the security guards approached carefully.
"Sir, should I call the police? The child appears to be alone."
Ellie immediately grabbed Logan's hand.
"Please don't."
Her tiny fingers trembled.
"I just wanted to know if you were a bad man."
Logan knelt again.
"No police."
The guard stepped back.
"Ellie... where does your mom think you are?"
"School."
His stomach tightened.
"What?"
"I told Mommy my teacher wanted us to come early. Then I took the subway."
"You came here... alone?"
She nodded proudly.
"I remembered the building from the newspaper."
Logan felt sick.
She was only five.
One wrong station...
One stranger...
One careless driver...
Anything could have happened.
He gently picked her up.
"Let's find your mom."
Ellie rested against his shoulder as though she'd known him forever.
The feeling was strangely familiar.
Like a missing piece sliding quietly back into place.
Grace Bennett's apartment was only twenty minutes away.
It wasn't the kind of neighborhood Logan usually visited anymore.
Old brick buildings.
Rusting fire escapes.
Children drawing with sidewalk chalk.
Laundry hanging from balconies.
The elevator was broken.
They climbed four flights.
Ellie happily pointed toward Apartment 4B.
"That's home."
Before Logan could knock, the door flew open.
Grace stood frozen.
Her face was pale.
Eyes swollen from crying.
One shoe on.
One shoe missing.
She had clearly been searching everywhere.
Then she saw Ellie.
"Oh, my God!"
She pulled her daughter into her arms so tightly Ellie squeaked.
"You scared me to death!"
"I'm sorry, Mommy."
Grace kissed her forehead over and over before finally looking up.
Her eyes met Logan's.
Everything stopped.
Five years disappeared.
Neither spoke.
Neither moved.
Finally Grace whispered,
"You found her."
Logan nodded.
"She found me."
Grace closed her eyes.
"I was afraid this day would come."
Ellie looked between them.
"So... you know each other?"
Grace managed a weak smile.
"Yes."
"A long time ago."
Ellie frowned.
"Then why don't you live together?"
Silence.
Children hated silence.
They always filled it.
"I brought something."
Ellie unzipped her little backpack.
"I wanted to show him."
Grace's face changed instantly.
"Ellie..."
But it was too late.
The diary.
The old blue diary.
The one Grace thought nobody had ever opened.
Ellie placed it in Logan's hands.
"I found your picture."
Logan opened the worn cover.
Between faded pages sat a photograph from college.
Grace was laughing.
He had his arm around her.
Written underneath in neat handwriting were words that made his chest ache.
The only man who ever made me believe tomorrow could be beautiful.
He turned another page.
Another.
Another.
Every page after she left.
Letters.
None mailed.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every anniversary.
Every page began the same way.
Dear Logan...
One letter read:
Today Ellie asked why she doesn't have a daddy.
I almost told her about you.
But you chose your dreams.
I chose to disappear before I became another obstacle.
I still love you.
That's the hardest part.
Logan swallowed hard.
He looked up.
"Grace..."
Tears rolled silently down her face.
"I found out I was pregnant two weeks after I left."
His breathing stopped.
"I tried to call."
"I saw your interviews."
"You were raising money."
"Expanding overseas."
"The whole world wanted a piece of you."
"I couldn't become another responsibility."
"You deserved your future."
Logan laughed bitterly.
"My future?"
He looked around the tiny apartment.
Peeling wallpaper.
Secondhand furniture.
Bills stacked beside unpaid prescriptions.
"You thought this was the future I wanted?"
Grace whispered,
"I thought I loved you enough to let you go."
Logan closed the diary carefully.
Then he looked at Ellie.
She was quietly drawing on a piece of paper.
Completely unaware that two broken adults had just lost five years they could never get back.
He looked back at Grace.
"You never gave me the chance to choose."
Grace nodded through tears.
"I know."
"And I've regretted it every single day."

For the first time in five years...
Neither of them had anything left to hide.
